Power Port Issues

I am trying to charge my cell phone while the engine is turned off, but the power port shuts off with the engine. Is there a workaround?

The first thing that comes to my mind, is to wire the outlet directly to the battery.

I don't know if this is true for the Solara, but it was for my old car ... does the cigarette lighter heat up when the engine is off? If so, you can use the lighter ...

I never really understood this. My sister's Camaro's power port has power all the time, but my old '91 Camry and my '01 Solara don't. I like the Toyota way because the Camaro way makes me nervous that it's constantly draining the battery. Is there really any worries that something plugged in there (like a CD player or cell phone) can drain off the battery?

by design, American cars have power running on those ports even if the car's off. Japanese cars are the exact opposite.

Radio Shack sells clips that attach to the fuses which then allows
you access to various voltage points.
I was able to locate fuse for power port and jump it to +12v
line. now my cell phone is always charging

On my last car, a Tercel the lighter was always on and one day I left a Cell phone charging all day while I was out and when I came back I needed to get a jump. Toyota must have heared complaints or something and redigned the way things work to prevent this.
