Passenger window problems

Postby pythonjosh » Thu Jul 29, 2004 9:27 pm

My passenger window hasn't been working the past like 2 months. I tested the wires when it first happened and gave up. Today I did some more thorough testing and hooked up a hot and a ground to the wires going to the window motor itself. I know the motor goes up or down depending on the polarity of the current. So one way it goes down, the other way it goes up, or at least it should. And when I engage the switch, both wires going to the motor turn hot. Not one pos one neg. So I've found that it will go down, but switching the wires, it will not go up! I have the Chilton's manual and it doesn't tell me anything useful. Except it did tell me that the motor itself has breakers built into it. Does anybody know how to raise the window w/o using the motor?

Update, I can get the window to go up and down by switching the wires I connect to the motor. I even went to Toyota and got the guy to copy a few pages out of the ultimate repair guide. But, I can't think of a way to fix this problem. The switch is fine because both wires go hot when I use the driver side control, yet the driver side window still functions normally. I also located the window relay and it's on the back side of the fuse panel! Damn near impossible to access and remove the relay for testing. However, there is only one realy for both windows. But one window works fine. I'm getting the idea that the relay isn't the problem. Sow now I'm stumped. If anybody out there has any ideas or help, please share some knowledge. I can't afford to take it to an auto-electrical shop to get them to fix it.

i'm not tryin' to offend you here....

but did you check the window switch on your driver's side? maybe the window LOCK button is engaged, therefore it would only let the driver's side window roll up and down.

Yeah dude.
No offense taken. Ppl think i'm retarded somewhat often, I'm used to it. Why? Because I do some stupid things. But not when it comes to electronics.
But I found a way to make the window work this morning. It's not 'fixed' but it works. I cut the 2 wires going to the motor and hooked them up to a 2 channel switch. Each channel has the wire to the motor as the common wire, and a ground and the wire to the window switch on opposite sides of the channel. And the opposite configuration for the other channel so either position the switch is in, there's one hot and one ground so the polarity can alternate to make the window go up or down. And then the positive is activated by the window switch on either side. It'll work this way until I can afford to go an autoelectrical shop.
