Octane use on NA-V6

Octane use on NA-V6

Postby SleeperSolara » Mon Aug 23, 2004 6:45 am

What octane should i use on my V6 Solara, in my owners' manual, and my repair book it says to use 87 or higher octane. So far i filled up the car in the past week and put in 87 octane wit some 104+ Import Octane Boost, and felt some more power. Now just yesterday i had a quarter tank left of the 87 and put in a new full tank of 89 octane and put some of the same octane boost in my gas tank. At first when i start off it feels alittle slugish but then when i pick up some spped it goes really fast. So what i'm askin' is what kind of octane should i use 87 or 89 octane.

your car will run fine on 87, it just wont be as fast.

Use higher octane fuel if you want to. Personally, I use 87 alot, because saving a few bucks here and there is beneficial to a poor college student. But i'll put in 90+ sometimes for fun :)

it's been proven that there is a definate psychological placebo type effect with what octane gas you use.

They've put 87 octane in and told people it was 91/93, and people said that they felt a difference over the 87 octane they normally use.

I know it's true normally. But on a v6 tuned for fuel economy, high octane gas really aint gonna help you that much.

I agree. It's all in your head. Sure if you had a 600hp car the octane would matter, but not in a solara (unless you are S/C use 91+)

My theory is if you don't care about your car run what ever cheap gas you want. If you care for it, then I'd just shell out the extra few cents a gal. and just get the higher octane rating. No matter what people tell you it comes down to what you want to spend on gas.

why can't you all understand the f in your engine code doesn't stand for fast.

the solara, even though it's a V6 is an economy car.

87 is going to do no damage to your car, and if you're worried, put in a little 89 every once in awhile. But i see no real need for going 90+ in this car. It's just a waste of money that probably makes you feel better because you can brag about it.

and you may lose 1 hp, god forbid you can't street race civics anymore.

hmm you say...

"why can't you all understand the f in your engine code doesn't stand for fast"

but before you say.

"... it just wont be as fast."

Then you say you'll put in 90 sometimes for fun? 1HP is fun?

I also highly doubt that people who use 90+ brag about shelling out more money for higher octane gas.

anyway, like I said though put what you want based on your care level for your car. I'm not saying 87 means you don't care, but simply means its not worth it for you to use the higher grade. Like saying if you don't care about washing your car much, any type of car wash soap will do. But those of us who do care buy the more expensive types of soap.

To each his own, my suggestion to SleeperSolara if its a daily driver and you're budget concious use the 87. If you're willing to spend the extra money, which it seems to me you are since you're buying the octane booster bottles, just fill it with the premium grade and don't put any additives in there.

That's not an acronym.

F stands for Twin cam for economy use.
G stands for Twin cam for general sport car use.
E stands for EFI (Electronic Fuel Injection).

So, in a rare case in Japan you'll find a 1MZ-GE. If you're familar with the IS300's 2JZ-GE engine, there's also a 2JZ-FE.

By the way, if you got a problem with the EFI and the engine light is on, don't fix it yourself - take it to a mechanic.

I got used to running 93 in my Maxima ("Premium Fuel Recommended") and so when I switched to the Solara, I continued to use it. IMO, it's just a little preventitive maintainance for your valvetrain and fuel system.

Fuel: choice of.....

Postby ezshift5 » Tue Aug 24, 2004 6:45 am

....IMHO - - - can make a difference. 87 works for me.

However, using higher octane pushes up the fuel efficiency somewhat.

Probably not enuff to justify the added bread....

(If FE no= fuel economy, something is working, as
I constantly get hellacious great MPG)

So it's only the f that stands for fuel economy.

i guess you didn't read the FAQ;s huh

What do the various engine codes mean?

First number is generation of the engine series.
The next two letters are the engine block series
The latter after the dash is the type of head (F=economy or G=performance)
E = Electronic Fuel Injection

There are 3 generations of the MZ series block. 1MZ - 3.0L, 2MZ 2.5L, 3MZ 3.3L.

If you want more info, it's listed on Toysport.com about the designation of the F and G series heads
The ONE & ONLY Fully Loaded 2006 X Avalon Limited with Body Kit in CA = Special Limited Edition + First 2GR-FE rebored the throttle body (i think...)

I only use premium fuel if it's recommended. Mine says right on the gauge cluster "Premium Fuel Recommended". Higher octane - more spark advance without detonation - more performance.
My wife has a 4 cyl Camry. Hers gets 87 octane....
