I've asked this before.. no reply.

As long as you change your oil and oil filter every 3k miles, you should be just fine. Sythetic oil has a hire boiling point so it can resist more heat, but you're not likely to need it. Another benefit, it doesn't leave mineral deposits in your system.

But it's not likely to make much difference, but it's your money.

Toyota's genuine motor oil isnt synthetic BTW NASTY... I have 25,000 miles on my car and had just switched to Castrol Synthetic rather then using Toyota's motor oil. I went to Jiffy Lube and they suggested that Mobil 1 was decent but that most of them were using Castrol synthetic, I decided on the Castrol...maybe next time I'll try the Mobil 1.

Is there any benefit with using synthetic over "real" oil?

synthetic is definitely a better quality oil.. It reduces more friction.

Because of the less friction, it's suppose to increase 0.5 HP or something....

Only thing is it's definitely more expensive... and people say once you switch to synthetic, you shouldn't go back to regular oil..

Does the system have to be "flushed" in order to put synthetics in? Or can the regular oil be drained and then synthetic be put right in?

Okay, just about everything increases horse power according to the advertisers. Even platinum plugs .. PLEASE! Where's the rolling eye smilie when you need it. I'm not saying it's not possible, I'm going to need to see the hard facts before you can change my mind on this. Besides, if that's the only benefit, I don't see much point. 0.5hp isn't much, even on a lawn mower.

Synthetic oil has less mineral deposits, less carbon, a higher boiling temperature, and is not as viscous (I guess this is the less friction part?).

There are definite benefits to using synthetic but it's debateable whether or not you'll ever realize those benefits in such a short time and whether it offsets the cost.

you can drain it without flushing.

has anyone used aftermarket oil filters?

i know k&n makes a filter thats supposed to flow more and i have found it for about $10 online. im coming up to oil change time and im wondering if its a good investment over a regular old plain-jane filter you would get at jiffy lube.
