Draggin' tips for auto

Draggin' tips for auto

Postby SleeperSolara » Sat Oct 09, 2004 11:44 am

I'm thinkin' about take my Solara to the tracks.
My car is an auto, wit an K&N air filter, and TRD radiator cap.
I know i need to empty the trunk as much as possible; like take out the spare tire, and the trunk carpet, and the jack.
I'm just goin to run wit full interior unfourtunetly.
Cause i don't want to strip the interior
I was worried about my car toppin' out before the 1/4 mile was up.
But now i'm for sure i don't need to worry about the top speed cause me and my friend just did a top speed run of 130mph. :o
I was so scared for crashin' but i handled it good.
Car sways alot for goin' fast cause i need a sway bar bad.
What should i do when i go to the track.
Launchin' the car should i: go from L, 2nd to D.
or should i leave it in drive.
When i put my car in L then shift to 2nd then D i get a better launch, but when i leave it in drive the car hops slightly.
2000 Solara SE auto V6. Diamond White Pearl.
Top Speed Run finished at 130 mph. :o

I think it depends on how you drive. My car drives completely different than a friends who drives normal. I pound the snot outta my car everywhere I go and it's got quite a bit of juice for being a mile up in alttitude. The transmission and engine are set by the ecu and if I am not mistaken it knows where you want to shift after a while. Heck, mine never shifts into OD until around 110. Mostly cause I drive it fast on a daily basis.

You can just keep it in drive. Right before the light turns green, just power brake to about 2000 rpms or so, then when it's green let off the brake and gun it.
Here's a link for info and pics of my 1999 Camry:

LOL, thats not a speed mod!

Definately don't worry about hitting the governor before the 1/4, its just not gonna happen. Power brake in D (with O/D off maybe?) for one run - dont hold it for long, your car will not like you at the end of the night. Then on the next run, try manually stepping the gears and see if there is a difference in ET. Good luck.

not really alot of fun running an auto...onlee thing u can really do is hit the gas when the light turns yellow. Other than that....shifting won't really make a difference, nor will brake torqueing. Try shifting though..just to see the diff in time. I didn't do it. I ended up getting the same time over and over again.

Auto draggin'

Postby SleeperSolara » Sun Oct 10, 2004 12:43 pm

Well i don't want to kill my auto tranny.
What i meant was: what tire pressure should i run them.
I have LeMans or somethin' on my stock rims, they are 55 series.
And other tips like:...................
I think i'm goin to shift the gears through, because i get a better start from "L".

well if you shift the gear through your still somewhat still hurting the engine/tranny. power braking actually help you launch better

Im sure youll be doing more than one run. Run your 1/4 in drive and then run it rowing the gears. Get back to us on which is better.

I've seen people mention that the first run is the best one since the engine isn't really hot yet. If your running comparisons you'll have to compare the subsequent runs. I think people run with 25 lbs. in the front tires and 40 lbs. in the rear tires. Try running with 1/4 tank of 94 octane gas. Chevron has it in Canada. I noticed when you floor it the car will shift at 6000 RPM so shifting manually should get you the extra 200 RPM to the redline. One car reviewer said the trick was to have the wheels spinning enough so the revs are up on launch but no white smoke coming out. I think about all we can do is compare shifting manually from leaving it in drive and see what speed you should rev it up to before letting the brake off and flooring it.

Auto draggin'

Postby SleeperSolara » Mon Oct 11, 2004 2:33 pm

I'll try that, when i get to the track.
I don't think my car would like 94 octane.
Iwould kill my car.
The highest i use is 87 and it runs good with that.

It might be hard switching back to 87 octane after running on 94, if the car advances the timing for the 94 octane. Hopefully it would just drop it back down, if the antiknock sensors get tripped when you go back to 87. Has anyone tried switching up to 94 then back down to 87 again?
