What is the stock stereo system in my Solara?

What is the stock stereo system in my Solara?

Postby Maud'Dib » Mon Nov 22, 2004 8:11 pm

I purchased my Solara used about a month ago, and as much as I like it, I'm thinking about replacing the stereo system.

But first, I want to know what I'm starting with. 1999 SE V6. On the original sticker, I have listed that as optional equipment, they added "Deluxe 3-IN-1 ETR/Cassette/CD with 6 Speakers". The H/U is a 2 DIN piece. The doors are components and the rear deck are coaxial.

What I'm most interested in is if there is an external amp seperate from the H/U and, if so, where it is located, and if the crossovers for the door components will be built into it (like in a BMW H/K system) or are seperate. I figure all this is important to find out about before I switch out the H/U.

I've got some experience with car audio and electronics, I just want to know where I'm starting so I can plan ahead for the install.

Thanks.

Look for a JBL logo on your front 6.5's. If there is one you have the JBL system with amplifier located behind the glove box. If no logo, then you have the base system.

Crossovers for the door components are independent of the amplifier so you should have no issue when upgrading your headunit. You will definately want to upgrade the speakers as well.

Thanks for the info. And I know I'll want to upgrade the speakers as well, but I needed info about a starting place before I could work out from there. Also, since funds are limited but dreams are grand, I'll probably work in steps, and being able to run for a little while on a new headunit before I have to replace the comps would be nice.

Im not too worried about the coaxials, cause it's really just rear fill. Eventually I'll have both the comps and the coax's replaced and a single sub fiberglassed into the trunk, with a new H/U and my MP3 player wired in. But that's a ways off.
