Replace Inner Tie-Rod

Replace Inner Tie-Rod

Postby SpecialK » Sat Mar 26, 2005 8:31 pm

I need to replace the driver's side inner tie rod to pass inspection. I've taken the wheel off and gotten the outer tie rod off. But I'm having trouble getting the inner tie-rod off. Does any one have any advice or tips on the best way to go about replacing it? Thanks.

You don't have an inner tie rod end. This car only has outer tie rod ends. The rest is the rack and pinion unit. I think either they want to sell you a rack & pinion (big $) or they want to sell you a load of crap. Get them to show you the bad inner tie rod end.

Well its listed in the toyota parts catalog as well as on the parts package as the inner tie rod so I am assuming thats what it is. Its also labeled as such on the steering gear linkage diagram. Its No. 2. I've replaced them on my integra and mr2 but this one seems a little different and more difficult.

I repalced Inner tie-rod (rack-end) on my corolla and it was a bitch. Autozone loans inner tie-rod pullers but they don't work with toyotas.
this is what I did. I removed the clamps for the rubber cover piece and pulled the rubber out. Then I used a small pipe wrench and grabbed the tie-rod not and pulled down. It was hard to reach and harder to turn the wrench. But it worked. putting a new one is the reverse of this. Again use a 'SMALL' pipe wrench to put it back on.
