Help..v6 solara is surging at a consistent throttle position

Postby nummiesSLE » Sun Apr 10, 2005 1:53 pm

so i've had my 2000 solara V6 5spd for about 6months now, but starting about 2 months ago i started to notice that if I kept the throttle at any position (lets say 25% open) (in any gear) instead of just a smooth ride, the car started to surge speraticly forward. When it started, it was extremely difficult to recognize, it was a real slight surge. The problem has cont. gotten worse and is to the point of doing this even when i'm accelerating, the car will slightly surge forward. :x I know it sounds a little wierd, but its hard to explain! I checked the air filter and there is no restriction there. I wasn't sure if i should focus on fuel or air. It cert. doesn't seem like the car is miss firing. When the car surges forward, it is only a half second or so. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!!!

clean your throttle body, there is a tutorial for it, then get a bottle of that injector cleaner and throw it in your tank at the next fill up. see if that does the trick.

That was the next thing i was gonna try, but i just don't see why that would have to do with the problem when this happens at a consistent throttle position?

In some case it could be your clutch isnt as strong so it kind of grabs then ungrabs. If not this then it could be how the air is entering you throttle body. Its not even and it throws your sensors off..my 5 cent since I have the same issue and i sorta just got use to it.

I had something similar happen to me a few months back. Using the scan tool, the throttle position sensor was slow to respond or didn't respond sometimes when the throttle was opened up. A new one was less than $50.

VSV goes hand in hand with the EGR valve... Emissions related...

I've seen this a few times on 1MZs... clean the throttle body, throw in the fuel injector cleaner (I recommend STP in the black bottle, labeled "Injector Cleaner") and you should be fine...

-pulled the plugs, they looked fine
-changed the air filter, (it also looked fine)
-tried using the injector cleaner (STP), didn't clear it up
-used the scan tool while driving it....TPS was working fine

-should my next step be to let Toyota stick me in the ass and charge me 70$ an hour to run a diagnostic test on it????

i'm still within the 60k mile 5yr part of the warrenty! But, when i swung by the dealership the other day, they fed me some bullshit about if there wasn't a CEL they'd have to charge me to even look at it. :agrue: I was pretty pissed, cause if I threw a rod out the bottom of the oil pan and blew up the motor, thats covered...but there wouldn't be a CEL for that, haha

I've never had to deal with a dealership to do work before...any experience on this....btw, I am second owner of the vehicle

It might be the MAF is mess up. just go buy yourself a scan tool from autoshop or ebay for 100 dollars instead get it scan from dealer. Is the car salvage title?

go to a local auto parts store, and ask if they have a scaner u can use. here in CA autozone lends it out, must leave $165 deposit, ask if they do the same.

cars not a salvage car, i bought it directly from the original owner, have all the dealership papers.... I already used my OBDII scan tool on it and found nothing really abnormal besides the timing was quite advanced, and now and then it seemed like it would run lean ( i don't know THAT much about this stuff, so I can't trust myself on the readings i was getting) What they said they were gonna charge, was to run a diagnostic test striaght onto their computer. I guess something only the dealership can do, I think the hookup is near the firewall on the passenger side (in the engine bay).

Yeah, forgot I actually had a current code for TPS so it was a no brainer.

The O2 sensors should fluxuate between rich and lean at idle, sort of constantly adjusting. It one is steady and not going back and forth, it may need to be replaced.
