5-Speed wheel hop common???

5-Speed wheel hop common???

Postby Toyota_Todd » Fri Nov 29, 2002 6:43 pm

Hey Solara people,

I have noticed under hard accelleration that the car will have a tendancy to have wheel hop. I have encountered it with the TRD 17" wheels with the Proxes and also with the stock alloys with Michelin tires. It is a bit worse with the 17's and I wonder if anyone else has had this issue? I was also wondering if it does this under NA conditions, how violent would the wheel hop become under the S/C boosted power? If you have a fix for this, please let me know. I am not used to wheel hop at all. My GT4 will only spin the tires about one revolution and its gone, no time to hop I guess. Any advice or comments would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. :o Wheel hop has to stop.......

Wheel hop is the scourge of FWD cars. It also is more apt to happen when you add more power and bigger rims. A fair number of Camry/Solara people have had that problem when going to the track.

I get it too. Sounds like the car is going to fall apart. :(

On my auto I have the same problem. Just got my supercharger installed and it definately adds more hop, but thats just becasue there is more power. Hopefully the suspension upgrade will fix it

We all have this issue, even with the Automatic guys. I get wheel hop on the Avalon when i'm accelerating hard with it. There isn't a real fix to wheel hop because our cars are FWD cars with a very soft tuned suspension. upgraded struts and springs will help it but it wont get rid of it. A real coilover system will remedy it more than a regular strut/spring combo. The only way to stop wheel hop is to feather the clutch and find the optimum acceleration without it. It takes timing and practice.

I know wheel hop feel terrible, but is it bad for the car, I'm assuming yes. But sometimes ill get it even when i am going slow and the front tires dont catch because its wet out
