Shifting is not smooth anymore?

Shifting is not smooth anymore?

Postby redsolara » Wed Dec 11, 2002 4:39 pm

I have a standard solara i bought in 2000 brand new, ever since like the last 6 months my shifting is really stiff, i mean i push it in first gear and it wont take it, i have the clutch pushed all the way in, and some times when i down shift it's hard and stiff too, i just miss the smooth shift times, maybee i need some work or adjustments??? Some times i have to try like three time to put it in reverse too, it kind of sucks, the car runs fine dispite this shift stiffness problem...

How many miles do you have on it and what are your driving habits? Could be your clutch. Are you the only one who drives this car, a clutch wears much quicker when many different people drive it.

i have 43,000 miles on it, and im the only one that drives it, i usually drive about 25 to 30 miles a day and 40 to 50 on weeknds. I only get oil changes done, ive never gotten anything else checked, well except about a year ago when i spent 120 dollars for the 15k mile check up with toyota, that sucked, they said everything was cool and basically did a visual inspection and topped all my fluids, any way... Im the only person that has been driving my car ever since i bought it.

All sticks are definitely not stiff (unless you meant all toyota sticks). Ever drive an Audi? Smooth..... almost a little too smooth.
the rough shift feel of the toyota stick is what kept me from getting one.

Peter - you have a TRD quickshifter, right? did that help any?

Is this happening all the time, or just in certain situations? I have recently noticed difficulties getting into first gear after I have come to a stop and want to start up again. I also sometimes have problems getting out of 2nd gear when I come to a stop. Once I'm going, there doesn't seem to be a problem, although I've never found the shifting to be super smooth.

Anyway, in my situation I was advised to have the gears re-lubed. I haven't been able to get it done yet, but plan to in the near future. If all your gears are a problem for you, it could be a lube issue, but might be an indicator of bigger problems.

no, the quickshifter actually makes it a little tougher.

Yes, actually my gears do tend to tighting up after coming to a complete stop and throwing it back in first, and it does happen once a while but at least once a day, but after that the other gears are cool, but also sometimes when i push into third gear for some reason it wont take it, maybee i do need to lube it up...

Change your gear oil every 30k or more frequently if the shifting is rougher.

There are things that should have been done at 30000, like change the Gear Fluid etc. I personally don't care what other people say about this but If you want to keep your car the way it was when you bought it, do all the recommened maintence. My car has NO trouble what so ever and I keep up with all scheduled Maint.

 Mine is doing the same thing..... just in 1st and reverse. I'm getting the 30K tune-up tomorrow morning, I hope that helps. My 30K is $280, they better do more than just glance over it.

My s/c should be here any day now :D

Sounds like your situation is pretty similar to mine. I have the 3rd gear issue, as well, but I think that's just a notchy gear on our cars. It just isn't a smooth move into 3rd gear. I seem to have to hunt for the gate most of the time. Lubing will probably help, but I don't think it will solve that problem. Hopefully, it will solve the first and reverse difficulties, though. Let us know how it works if you get it done soon.
