Hey everyone. Just got a 99' Solara V6 last month, and a check engine light came on yesterday.

Codes P0402 and P1411 - no idea what the problem is except it pertains to the EGR (excessive flow) and EGR position circuir range.

Any ideas? Specifically cheap DIY stuff?

The advance auto parts guy reccomended I clean the EGR; I'm uncomfortable opening anything there, but if it's easy/safe, I'll go for it. Gunna run some cleaner in the car when I fill it up with gas tommorow too.

Should I take this to my mechanic or a dealer? Never had a Toyota before so I'm wary of the dealers; my mechanic won't rip me off but he's not the best at fixing things the first time either... cars suck sometimes ><.

Thanks everyone :).

it doesnt hurt to do it by yourself, it just a air pollution control device. it is very likely one code triggered another code. do yourself a favor, go buy a oem repair manual from dealeror ebay, it has step by step with picture instruction.

in the mean time, just reset your computer to clear the error code and check engine light.

Already cleared it twice, keeps coming back on after 10 miles or so... I'm gunna try taking apart the EGR valve, but try some injector cleaner first (seafoam or whatever).

I have the hanyes manual, it has the steps, I've just never touched anything under the hood of a car, and don't have a voltometer/ohmmeter to measure the stuff and find the fauly part (if it's not buildup causing it).

Yeah the manuals are expensive, waiting to find one on cd for $20 or less on eBay ;).
