Stock talk about the Generation 1 and 1.5 Toyota Solara which were produced from 1999 to 2003.

Bye bye motor.

Bye bye motor.

So a bit ago I took my solara out for a stress test as we could say. At first we noticed a slight tapping in the heads. Then we noticed a check engine light at random. Then at higher rev a knock. Welp turns out I spun three bearings on my crank and have a slightly bent valve rod (not 100% sure on this one yet but it seems to be the issue after pulling the covers and checking comp).

So we went out today hunting for something to do to the car. Looking at different motors around the yard and trying to figure something out..

1) I have a nice avalon with all the parts i need (took a turn around 80 and rolled over three times then slid down a hill for about 60 feet). Convert the solara to VVT-I (means i have to redo some of the wireharness from what i can tell so far)

2) Put a 3.0 back into the car and deal with it.
3) Spend a few months and rebuild the current motor out.
4) let the car sit next to its dead toyota brothers as punishment. (has a nice F360 to talk to now (only 1/2 the car is there, rest melted in a fire. new addition today. Laugh)

I am really working on putting the VVT-i into the car as it is pulled and ready to go. Anyone else ever looked into this? I know some people have wanted to go from vvt-i to non vvt, but I am just wanting to do something different.

And to be really odd. We have a motor from a caddie (not 100% sure what the heck it is from but, its a fwd version and will fit into the engine bay with some engine mount relocating. fwd v8 solara. haaha (not gonna happen but we were bored and have no use for this motor... Going to crush it prolly as it takes space and since we only do imports. Its hard to sell domestic parts.)

Also finding out we can bolt up a 5VZ-FE to our tranny. This is the engine in the tacoma (3.4l - Super chargers are alot cheaper and easy to find). More torque but who knows, guess it would be good for jumping off the line)

5VZ = rear wheel drive transmission.

1mz = front wheel drive TRANSAXLE.

no.

Just do the avalon switch. You will need to run both ecus... unless you also throw the avalon tranxaxle in. I know people that have done AUTO IS 300 to AUTO IS 300 w/ GTE engines... they use the GTE ECU for the engine and use the IS 300 stock ecu for the tranny... it's a bitch to wire the network, but it's the only way w/o throwing everything off.
1GR-FE ftw!

Yeah, there was some people who did the 5VZ motor into a camry though. Engine was just to tall but dunno what was done about that. Laugh. Should be an interesting project. Small gains off this motor though but since I have it figure what the heck. Cant afford new internals for my motor at the moment due to cost of getting them fabbed. Plus I kinda need this solara working as it is somewhat of a demo car for systems I have designed.

Swap will be free. I bet i spend less than 50$ on the swap since i have a yard full of parts. heh

Here is a quick compare of the motors. Just from the toyota tech books.

Also i know some people are thinking that there isnt that much gain to this. However you gain VVT-I, higher redline. Same motor really, it is also a little bit stronger than the solara 1mz.
