making doors shut like a real luxury car

Postby JAYDEE23 » Mon Sep 05, 2005 7:49 pm

so i am getting deeper and deeper into this solara and one thing that bothers me is the slam of the door

w/ pricey components going in and a problem with my last car as far as leads falling of the speakers, even soldered! i wonder what we can do about getting our doors to shut like say a high price lexus

you ever notice the soft muffled click of a nice cars doors?

i am thinking about placing some thick foam in some spots..dont know if it will work but i dont see why not

as long as it doesnt deform the padding that keeps moisture out..ill keep you posted..any ideas??

I was just looking at VW Jetta's today... my cousin's looking to buy.

The sales lady did a really cool thing and actually SAT on the top of the door and bounced... not only was it hot, but it showed how sturdy the hinge was. I know that it's not much of a luxury car, but the doors were light and had really big hinges. I saw a part I never saw before, looked like a shock absorber. When I was commenting on how easily the doors shut, the sales lady said that those actully help in the closing of the door becuase they act like a reverse shock absorber.

I've never heard of this before and don't know much about it, but I just thought I mite share it and maybe give you an idea since it impressed me when I saw what it did.

I just checked the doors on my dad's cadillac... They had the same thing, and the hinge is about 2" tall.

ive had this problem with nearly everyone that enters my car. its hard vibration feel with a hollow coarse sound. VERY bad sound. and so i told her to close the door lightly...didnt work. the door seems to only close half way (where it makes a clicking sound, but doesnt full initiate). ANYTHING to reduce that sound should be brought up immediately. -

I can't stand it when people slam my doors! You don't slam the doors in your house, why would you in a car??

I think the doors on the Solara have a nice sound when closing (when the windows are up).

Yeah same here.

I wish that our frameless windows were like the windows of the Mercedes that have frameless.
I believe the only thing to do is oil up the hinge to be smoother.

i tried it..works a little but with the window down it doesnt matter if you foam the whole door..still going to rattle

best suggestion..shut your door with the window up..shuts nice. you get the cushion of the air tighteness of the cabin and the cushion from the original weather stripping against the window.

for a bit of cushion when shutting it with the window down you will need foam at about 5/8" to 3/4" thick self sticking foam

place it along bottom of door on car side..at the bottom corner towards the back seat and up the side towards the back seat on both sides of the door switch (shuts inside light on/off)
