V6 engine misses

V6 engine misses

Postby mshearon » Fri Oct 07, 2005 7:29 am

I have a 99 Solara SLE with a V6. Recently the engine starting missing once in a while. I took it to the dealer and they told me it needed plugs and wires for $380.00. I changed the plugs and wires myself (did not remove the plenum) but the hesitation is still there. One time I got an error code that read #6 cylinder missfire. I swapped the ignition coils between 5 and 6 hoping to move the problem hence verifying the problem. The engine stilll misses but I haven't seen another error code. Can anyone tell me what the problem most likely is? I'm leaning towards a faulty injector. I measured the injector resistance an all 3 injectors across the front and got 17 ohms each. I've also cleaned and inspected the throttle body and all the vacuum lines I can find. Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure if the V6 has a cap/rotor but my Jeep had the same problem. My cap was loose and the rotor inside was cracked.
Fuel injectors could be the problem like you said too!

I thought you v6 guys had direct ignition? (distributorless ignition). I think your coil pack is bad, if you replaced your wires and spark plugs correctly. what kind spark plug did you put it in, you sure it has right gap?

If everything is right you most likely will need some new coil packs. . . contact Greg *Paladin06Greg* I remember he was selling some brand new OEM ones

Make sure the ground for the existing coil pack is good. It may look "ok" but clean it up anyways. A bad ground can cause intermittent problems. It is not likley the cause, but better to check it then spend money on a new coil only to find that it was the ground all along. The ground spot should be clean and without corosion.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for all the help...the problem ended up being an ignition coil pack sparking to ground. I ended up having the dealer fix it. It cost $93 for the coil pack and $98.00 to do the work (1 bolt and 2 connectors). I felt I should have gotten a kiss, but am glad my car runs great again.

Yes they connect to one plug directly and have a plug wire that goes around to the firewall side of the engine.
