Solara to Celica manual tranny swap?

Solara to Celica manual tranny swap?

Postby Monkeyman » Sun Oct 09, 2005 6:04 pm

Does anyone know if the bellhousing is the same for the Solara I4 and the Celica 6 speed tranny? Is the input shaft the same? Is the managment computer the same? Are the CV shaft inputs in the same place?

To the point:
Will the 6 speed Celica transmision fit in a 2.4 litre I4 Solara with a 5 speed manual?

I am thinking that it might lower my rpm's in top gear, then with lightweight wheels and flywheel I should see much better acceleration, a higher top end, more torque, and better fuel economy.

PS: I put this post here because it is not an aftermarkt upgrade, but a factory upgrade...... of sorts.... I am hoping that some one who is either a Toyota tech, or some one with a whole lotta' Toyota experience will read it and give me an answer.

Thanks guys!

im guessing that you would need a conversion for the bellhousing on the tranny to the engine... you might also have to make a bigger hole in your floor for the shifter.... there are endless possibilities of what could be different... do you have any pics of the tranny itself mounted to the celica engine?

also I bet you would have to have custome half shafts...

any pics of a celica motor mounting to that tranny?

I really doubt its gunna work. The engine in the Celica 2000+ GTS (2ZZGE) was designed by Yamaha for Toyota, so theres probably countless ifferences between the 2AZFE and 2ZZGE and thier tranny hookup points.

It might be easier (and far less expensive) to simply unscrew your Solara's radiator cap, lift up said cap, and slide a Celica underneath it.

But I could be wrong. My 2¢.

On another note, even with gas hovering around $3 or so per gallon, I'm still not sure you're not going to have some difficultly coming out money ahead on this project.

I'd order the very latest JC Whitney catalog and take a look under "transmisson converters" which should be after "dancing hula girls" and "naked lady mudflaps" but before "velvet dashboard kits."
