Supercharger Removal Help!!

Postby Paladin06Greg » Fri Oct 14, 2005 8:43 pm

My daughter and I were just about to remove my SC and only had one bolt left to remove. Standing in front of the car, on the left hand side, there is a bolt on the backside of SC that goes through a black metal bracket. The head of that has been rounded of so bad from prior removals and installs that I can not even get a socket to stay on it. So yea, now I'm pissed.

Anybody got an idea how in the hell I might get that bolt out. As you can see if you have an SC there is little to NO room back there to work.

Steamin in the desert!!

Cut in with a dremel in the middle and use a screwdriver to unscrew where you made the cut. Hope that helps :-?

Undo the bolt at the bottom of the black rod and take it all out.

If you have the bolt off that holds the power steering pipe on that is what I would do. You do have to crawl under there though, and reach up. May not have room between the SC and firewall to do anything else.

Hey guys I really appreciate the support. I was so mad last night I had trouble sleeping.

First I'll go under her, then I'll try the special socket. No room to do anything while the SC is installed on the car.

Again thanks guys. 8)

yeah the special socket has groves that will cut into and hopefully seat.

i have not had much luck with these sockets but they do work sometimes.

the dremel method(slot bolt then use flat head to remove) works well as long as you make sure there is enough meat on the bolt head left to stand up to the amount off pressure needed to remove it..

if all else fails and you destroy the head try tapping the screw around w/ a center punch

if that fails drill a hole and use an extractor

if that fails..go to the liquor store

LOL, thats classic

I'm not sure if you have the room to do this, but you can always take a smaller socket and then use a mallet to hammer it on. This may destroy the socket which is why you want to buy a craftsman set because it has a lifetime gaurentee

Well the tool worked life a charm. I got the SC off and found several concerning problems. The metal tube on the back side of the SC that is hooked to the PCV valve by rubber hose was broken free of the SC housing. I could spin it 360 degrees with my finger.

Once out there was oil coming out of the SC and when rotated by hand the SC was very noisy and slightly rough. I also noted some backlash when rotating the pulley by hand. More then what I remember when it was new.

I did not notice any metal shavings in the SC or in the engine intake. I have a very small magnetic tool that I stuck in all openings and it came out clean on each one. Tomorrow I'll pull and inspect my metal, reuseable oil filter just to make sure.

Maybe, just maybe I got lucky. Several other problems were found not SC related but they will need to be corrected before I put her back together..

Waiting on my new SC.

Thanks again for all the help.

Well I don't have it yet but I will soon. I plan to have the old one rebuilt and then put it up for sale. There are a number of folks who are interested. I will sell it at a very fair price.
