Is it a sulfur (i.e. rotten eggs) smell?

Out of curiosity, is there a typical problem with the catalytic converter on Solaras?

Rotten eggs smelll is often an indication of something with the catalytic converter or exhaust system. I get the smell sometimes when I've put the car through hard acceleration. Almost never drive car hard, can't afford to repair anything right now.

Well does any one know? Or is it simply resolved with an aftermarket or new exhaust system. Because I think mine smells because of age, most vehicles need exhaust work done around 100K anyways.

i had this prob w/ my MAX plus it shook violently every some thousand miles...which is why i sold her....apparently it was the O2 sensor and possibly the coils going bad one by one...(although i changed 2). poo.

BUT THEN my 94 camry ....used to do this thing where it would SHAKE violently stink up all over (inside the car and outside) then juz STOP. it was annoying as anything....i had soo much stuff changed...tune up( had the plugs changed 2-3 times), distributor, timing belt, the list is endless...but they couldnt figure out what the eff was wrong

this is why i'm keeping my car stock for a while...too traumatized by all the shaking....

I get my tranny fluid drained and refilled ever 10k miles. That way i circulate the old fuild out so i dont have to do a tranny flush as often.

but it sounds like your cat might be going out... since it smells like rotten eggs from your comments..

Get a aftermarket hi-flow cat if possible since your going to replace it anyways..

IIRC, the warranty on emission is much longer than the standard Toyota warranty. My recollection is that it's on the order of 10 years/100,000 miles.

whats a ball park price for the trans flush? and who makes a QUIET hi-flow cat? im not into that loud/deep, whinning sound you get from alot of aftermarket cat-backs.

Longo does the flush for about 100 bucks i think.. you might want to confirm that with Jackass aka Jeff. The last time i did mine was at 45k. after a long round trip i took. But i normally do a drain and refill every 10k miles which is $50 bucks. This helps since your circulating some of the old fuilds out every time you do.. I rather pay the maintinance now then having to wait and pay for bigger damages later on down the line.
