is the tach on a fuse

is the tach on a fuse

i was putting my car back together in a rush after installing the remote starter, and now, in addition to hte running lights and interior lights not working, the tachometer isnt working. the speedo still works tho. is this just a fuse or something more complex?

The tach and the speedo and also the fule/temp gauge.
Basically the whole guage cluster is wired on 1 fuse.
It would be under instrument panel fuse.
Behind the coin tray.

no, i dont mean the lighting for it. i mean the actual tachometer stays at 0. the speedo, fuel, and temp gauges still register correctly.

where did you grab the tach wire at, an igniter? Doesn't sound like a power issue or fuse issue, sounds more like an information issue. make sure that you used the correct wire from your remote start, if it's made by dei then the wire should be purple. I would take the wire off of where you tapped into it and see if it starts working fine again.

i tapped into the tach wire at the ecm (black/orange i beleive). i used a voltmeter to check if it was actually registering voltage changes with rpm and it was. is there risk of damage to the wire just from tapping into it?

no there shouldn't be damage just from tapping into it, unless you have the wrong wire from your brain. Say if you were using an output wire instead of an input wire.

quick question, you tested for ac voltage not dc correct?

i tested for dc. i dont quite understand the reason to test ac? also, i tapped the wire which was designated as tach in the car's wiring diagram

your tach wire reads ac voltage, it should start off around 2 or 3 volts, and as you press the gas it should go up with the rpm to like 6 or 7 volts.

you can also pick it up at an igniter, if your looking at the igniters it's the wire that keeps changing color in the pins. I hope you know what I mean by that.

What brand is your remote start? If it is DEI, such as viper, valet, python, clifford. Then your wire should be purple.

the starter is made my Magicar. It's probably not the highest quality unit, I didn't know this when I bought it back in March. Anyhow, I dont know exactly what yuo mean by the wire that keeps changing clor in the pins. A little clarification would be helpful, please. Also, as for the DC / AC thing, dont those refer to current and not voltage. A DC voltage can still vary with rpm/temp/whatever. Correct me if im wrong.

dc and ac due refer to the type of current, but are produce different voltages. By testing the tach wire for dc, you will recieve dc but it will have no relevance. With the ac, you can watch the voltage increase as you slowly increase the throttle. I don't know what color wire you should be using with a magiccar brand, i've never heard of it.

as for the igniter, let's say you have 3 wires going into the plug on the first igniter, black, orange, white. on the second igniter you have black, orange, red. on the third igniter you have black, orange, blue. You can use any of the wires that keep changing color, ex. the whit, red, or blue wire. These are all tach signals.
