You can change the bulbs (194 wedge btw), but you wont get the look of a real Electroluminescent display like what you see on most Lexus models. The Electroluminescent display is a vaccum display which is pitch black when off, and glows bright when electrically powered. This unit costs about $1000+ for just the whole speedo cluster alone.

Take off the two phillips screws at the top of the speedo bezel, remove the bezel, take off the 3 or 4 screws holding down the speedo cluster in the back. Next you just have to angle the speedo cluster to get it out of the hole. Make sure you unplug the wiring and you should be able to get access to the whole back. The bulbs are located behind the "twist on" covers. There should be about 4 to 5 bulbs. I forgot exactly, it's been a LONG time since I took my dash apart.

I just changed my dash lights. It was real easy, thanks to flipsides step by step instructions, thanks. I put blue bulbs in instead of the green ones, I like it a lot.

Which bulb brand did you end up going with? You may also want to change the bulbs behind the HVAC controls. In order to access those bulbs, you pull off all 3 HVAC knobs (i'm assuming you have an SE model) take a philips...remove the screws...and now you should be able to access the panel. If I recall correctly, those are 194 as well. :)

peter,

pull the cluster as far as possible toward you (give or take it's about 2-4 inches of movement) then, when it can't go anymore, rotate the bottom part toward you while sliding it out.

The clock you won't be able to make red. If you have auto climate control than you can't but if you have manual control then you could.
