Old man pisses me off and solara has a fit over it

Story:
So today after work I go to the grocery store to pick up some beer so I could have something good to drink while I watch the Bengals game I had to miss yesterday. Well Im trying to turn left out the exit during rush hour on to a very busy street. It was just one of those days that there was just constant traffic and I couldnt make the turn. So old dude behind me is getting impatient and starts honking. Im getting pissed at him now. So im thinking if he honks again im gonna get out and yell at him to back the f@ck up. Well he honks again and instead I just causually open the sun roof and give him the birdy. Old man just starts shaking his fist. I thought is was funny and laughed. Well then I finally get a little break in the traffic and I lit em up out of the exit. (my way of say haha f@ck you old dude you have to wait your turn now)

Question:
Well when I lit em up I didnt dump the clutch but I let it out fast and dropped the gas to the floor. My tires spun and I smelled burnt rubber. All thats fine, but I noticed when I was shifting that my clutch pedal seemed a little light. So now im wondering if i really smelled the clutch. To me burning rubber and a clutch burning smell almost identical. Do you guys think my clutch could be on it way out in the near future? Ive notice other times before when Ive done this that the clutch pedal gets light but then like 5mins later its goes back to normal. The cars got 82k on it. If so how much does a clutch normaly cost to replace. I know my camaro was a grand, but for some reason I think I read on hear before thats it cheaper than that. I dont mess with transmissions, not my area.

Moral: Next time Old dude pisses me off Im just gonna sit there a little longer. :bday:

As long as your gear is engaging, then its all good. When you rev up to 3K and then pretty much rev it up to engage a gear or think the gears are sticky (or not engaging) thats when you might have a prob. long story short, if you think you need to repeat your actions, may i suggest synthetic tranny oil in conjunction with a tranny cooler.

Just took it out for a little test drive. The clutch pedal feels normal again. Jai-Jai Im not quite sure I understand your second sentence. Are you saying that if I have to engage my car at like 3k then that is bad? What do you mean by sticky? Thanks~ chris

Clutch and rubber do not smell the same at all. As long as your clutch isn't slipping you don't need to replace it. I just replaced mine and labor was $400 including flywheel resurface.

Yeah, the clutch burning smell is VERY distinct. Not like rubber at all. Unfortunately, my clutch went out at like 82,500 miles, which was very uncommon, but is very close to your mileage. If you let the car and clutch cool down and it shifts fine later, I wouldn't get too worried.

When I first got my car a few weeks ago I was takign a friend from the top of first through third (you guys know that's the most fun, at least I think so anyway) and I missed a gear due to my noobness and smelled that brunnign clutch smell, it got me so scared. That's the only time it's happened, but when you smell that smell it's very distinctly different from burning rubber, I've smelled enough burnig rubber at the track to never mistake that smell.

The cars still been doing fine, but the clutch is getting older and will ned to be eventually replaced, so it's probably a good thing I'm honing my MT skills on an old clutch anyhow. That's what sucks about getting a car at about 80k, especially sinc ethe timing belt hasn't been changed. I'll have to do that, change out the clutch eventually, and the springs and struts are so loud and annoying, nothing like my SLE was :(

Anywho, sounds like your car is fine.

From my experiences with my 00 Solara SEV6 (Manual)... It could be one of few things.. If the pedal is feeling light, and not pushing back as hard as it should be, the cause of it will be more than likely loss of pressure in the master cylinder; if thats not the case the slave cylinder is leaking. Either way take it to a shop and have a pro look at it. Will save you lots of time and hassle, even though it might not save you $$$

Its fine now. Theres no leaking cause I dont see anything on the garage floor. Im sure it just got heated up causing it to feel a little loose. By they way are your from ohio? I noticed you have a front plate on your car?
