Shifter cable

Shifter cable

Postby Scott-R » Mon Jan 09, 2006 9:33 pm

Well, somehow, my shifter cable has a kink in it ('99 SLE, automatic transmission). In theory, I ran over something (quite some time ago), but I don't recall ever hearing anything. Anyway, the symptoms are getting worse. Not infrequently, when I shift into Park, it doesn't lock... The car will roll while making clicking noises. I have to shift back and forth, sometimes several times, in order for it to get it right.

Anyway, the dealer wants about $450 plus tax for parts and labor. Overpriced?

Sounds to me like it isn't going all the way into park. Have you visually confirmed that it's kinked? This cable is adjustable, so before I paid a cent I would adjust it myself. If it did get snagged on something, but it's not torn up too bad, adjusting it might just solve your whole problem.

Beats me; I don't know where to look. Actually, other symptoms pre-dated the "Park" problem. Shifting was sluggish and imprecise--it seemed to move a very short distance into gears (e.g., Neutral into Drive) and the movement didn't seem to really click into place. The rolling problem started this past fall. The dealer said they lubricated and adjusted it, and it seemed a LITTLE better for a short while, but it's been getting worse again.

Send me a PM with your email address and I'll send you some info on how to adjust it. If it's the same dealer that wants almost $500, I wouldn't think too much of their lube & adjust job...
