I don't think the mileage is stored in the cluster or else everyone would be doing this....

yep u need to hack into the cars computer to reset it, not just replace the guage, but you didn't hear that from me. Programs exist for this, but of course they are not cheap.

If you get another odometer to replace the one you have, it'll read the mileage that the odemeter has on it. However, the car itself will maintain the actual mileage of the car.

There are also tools out there that reset the odemeter that cost $2k - $4k (illegal to have, but most shady used car dealerships will have one to delete the actual mileage for lower mileage visually, making the customer think he/she is getting a good deal).

Not worth switching it if you don't have too.

So it will read the current miles that are on my car or the miles of car it came out of?

^^so you mean that it will actually show the mileage of the new odometer?? how can this be if it is all electronic? i figured the mileage would not save in the gauge cluster. who knows.

It will show what milleage there is on that cluster alone. So you can swap it and it will show the current milleage on that cluster instead. IMO not worth doing. Why be an Ahole and screw someone else over because you swap the cluster out. be proud of the solara and its ability to go pass 200K miles and still run strong.

I never mentioned anything about swapping back and forth gauge clusters. I was saying that if you remove your gauge cluster with your actual mileage for one of lessor mileage, the mileage of whatever gauge cluster is in there will be shown......but the actual mileage is still recorded in the ECU or what not.

Its not worth it to swap the cluster if there isn't anything wrong with it.

I can confirm this. I got a guage cluster off ebay because I sprayed some cleanser the plastic covering of mine and let it sit too long, and it mildly ate through it, leaving spots. Bought the cluster since it was cheaper to get the whole thing used than to buy the single part new.

I plugged in the ebay cluster to check it out, and it does indeed show the lower mileage. However, dont get one with the intent of lowering your shown miles. I'd imagine the ECU still shows actual mileage. If you know the odometer is reading different than actual miles, and dont disclose this to a buyer, its against federal law and they can sue you (Odometer fraud). Looking it up really quick, minimum liability is $1500 and maximum is 3x actual damages.

You dont wanna be playing that game.

The new, lower mile instrument cluster will read the same mileage when you plug it in. In other words, if your car has 100K and you have a new cluster with 50K. When you swap them, the new gauge will read 50K. However, the main internal computer of the car will still show the ACTUAL mileage and the dealer has a way of extracting this information. I've brought cars to dealerships before to verfiy the mileage shown on the car is correct.

I wonder if anyone knows...

Is actual mileage read by ODB-II or through another interface?
