Noise Underneath??

Noise Underneath??

Postby Bonesy2 » Thu Jan 16, 2003 9:32 am

All of the sudden, when I go over a bump or rough road, I hear a noise underneath the car. It sounds like something loose slapping against the bottom under the front floorboards. I can even feel it in my feet sometimes. Now, if I turn the radio up I can almost not notice it.

I've had two different mechanics take a look at it. One couldn't hear it and couldn't find anything. The other could hear it but has no idea what it is. They checked everything underneath and it seems fine. They say I don't need shocks or struts or anything. But, it also seems like I can feel every single little bump in the road.

I don't know what to do? Any ideas?

Thanks,
Lisa

You might want to check and see if your exhaust piping is bolted tightly. Or check to see if you have anything hanging down abnormally from the front section of your car.

if it happens when your foot is on the brake, i'd say it's the ABS kicking in, but if not, it's probably something along the lines of what flip suggested.

Yeah, I had the entire underside checked and nothing is loose.

No one can figure this out. Haven't taken it to the dealer.

Just wondered if anyone has any experience with it.

damn, that must really suck. please let us know when you find out so when others get this problem, we'll know how to fix it. could it be in your engine bay? maybe your mud guards?

:/ I think have the same problem as you too. my solara has been doing that since ive gotten it. it was in an accident before i got it but the damage was mostly in the right rear quarter panel. and a slight hit in the front. but i wouldnt think those two would affect whats under. possibly the previous owner drove the crap outta of it. the car drives perfectly fine though except for the sound i hear underneath. when i open my driverside window without the radio up and drive over unsmooth road i can hear "things" its a lil tiny bit of squeeking and a lil bit of something else i cant describe. seems to be coming from the left wheel though. my father says its possibly the shock :/ havent had time to try to fix it though.

Bonesy2 do you hear any other sounds when you turn the wheel and slowing drive? I get a small "pop" o_O sound when i do. like when i back out of a parking lot and turn the wheel to one direction (forgot which at the moment) and then slowly back out, i hear a small pop and thats it. happens most of the time :/ but the car drives fine. been driving it for many months.

This is strange. I have the same annoying sound too. But mine comes from the passenger door. It sounds like something stiff is loose and it wiggles and slaps on another material creating a really annoying tapping sound every bump i hit. Sometimes when I drive on a rougher road, that sound comes up. It probably went away during the summer, but now it's back again. Do you think I should operate on the passenger door? If I could, then how would I be able to distinguish what's loose there or not? I dont have a clue what it has in the first place.

i agree w/ blaze..those damn gremlins..they can always see you

if it's the door, the only logical explanation i can think of based on your winter/summer observation is the door jam. like in the summer, sometimes you can't get a door shut as easily as in the winter, since it expands from the heat. (maybe it's just me..but one door in my house you have to slam shut b/c of the heat)

maybe in the winter it's loose so it's slightly able to vibrate or move..hence noise. and in the winter it's tighter so it doesn't smack up against anything.

i'm probably 100% wrong :P but it's a good try
