Tachometer Error?

Tachometer Error?

Postby x61485x » Mon Jan 30, 2006 9:00 pm

Hey everyone,

I bought my Solara last year with under 50K on it. It's a 1999 SLE V6 Auto, and now its a little over 80K. I was so excited when I was buying the car that I didn't notice that there was something wrong with the tach.

It shoots all the way up to 9,000 RPM :o . Now I don't believe the engine is ACTUALLY revving up to 9,000 (I HOPE NOT). I think the Tachometer is just calibrated wrong? Does anyone know what could have caused this problem? And how to fix it?

Thanks!

Impossible, the tach stops at 8000, and fuel cut is 6350 (or around there)

u didn't notice there was a problem with the tach for a year?
when does it actually shoot up to 9k rpms? right when u step on the accelerator?

or u should try to take it out of park or neutral and stop revving ur engine...
and did u know that the pedal doesn't have to be depressed all the way down for the car to accerlate...

:D

Probably something wrong with needle or something, take it to a dealership or shop, they'll look over it for free and most likely fix for free too.

YEah, in the auto Solara in "D" you shouldn't be able to shoot past just above 6k, the car won't let you. In manumatic mode, with the delay of the shift I accidently ran my old Solara well into the 7k RPM range, but I don't think the tach even goes past 8. Someone may have swapped out your gauge cluster :o at some point in time, either that or there's a major mechanical/electrical problem. I've never heard of this as an inherant problem with our cars, you may want to take it by Toyota and see what they have to say about it. Does it do it in every gear, or just in certain situations?

first of all, thanks for all the helpful input...

maybe i didn't explain my problem clearly enough, sorry :( .

The engine runs fine, and I don't abuse my tranny...lol

On a cold day, the car will idle with the tach at 2K, then slowly come down to about 1K. When I give it gas, rpms will climb steadily until it hits 9K, and then shift to the next gear. That only happens when i'm trying to go fast, when i'm cruising, it'll shift at a lower rpm, like 6K-ish.

You know that 9k = 9,000RPM as in 3000RPM above the redline for the solara.

I'd say check the camshaft position sensor... that is where your tach gets its reading... the sensor might be worn... camshaft position sensors go bad naturally... on the V6 its located around the front of the car on the block
