Car shuts off on highway? WHY?

Car shuts off on highway? WHY?

Postby DatSRBoi » Sat Feb 11, 2006 9:00 pm

I dont know why but this happens on the highway allot only. Not on regular road yet so thank goodness... This is very serious. But For some reason my car has idle'ing issue I think. Sometime when Im about to exit the highway my car would like shut off. It only happens when I clutch in. My car doesnt idle low at all. It use to but I restiffen the throttle line by moving the bolt more out. The problem is Its already at the end of the bolt and I cant move it anymore then it already is at. So thats some big issue there. SOmetime the car idles at 750rpm, sometime at 900rpm. The way ive stretched my throttle line I think Id be idleing at 1200rpm.. So whats GOING on? Sometime it idles as low as 700 rpm. Majority of the time it idles at 900rpm with the throttle line at its maximum end. Im getting its one of the reason why my car shuts off on the highway. From my guess its because with my knock sensor CEL its causeing my car to run rich looseing power. Maybe the powerlost causeing my car to shut off?

but then I cant let my car idle at 700 rpm because it feel like the cars really choking badly. So i ran up the idel to 800..but over time the car idles low again.. So I ran up the idel now to 900 rpm..but thats the max I can extend the throttle line at. HELP!!! Even with the knock sensor fixed the car still does that I believe.

Couple things: A completely normal solara can idle as low as 600rpm no problem.

Second, adjusting the throttle cable is just a band-aid for what sounds like a serious problem.

Sounds like something it clogged or the IAC has gone bad. Have you cleaned the throttle body?

Also, I drove around for almost a year with a blown knock sensor and I didn't have any problems

Whats the IAC again? I forgot. Nothings clogged at all. Throttle isnt dirty. Even if it has it wouldnt have caused this kind of issue. Wheres the IAC located?

have you try to seaform it? have you check engine oil level? have you fix your CEL or knocking sensor issue. did you replace your spark plugs with ik22? have you clean or replace your filter? you sure your car is tune up properly?

From Intake down to the exhaust tip its clean. No build up of any kind. OIl and plugs are brand new. Car is kept as stock as possible even with the trd sc. KNocks are blown and this is my second set. Have a feeling the guy who installed it for me didnt fully hook it up right. He wasnt sure how the hose routed when he did my car. I ACTUALLY had to tell him one line wasnt right. So this is getting bad. I cant seem to figure it out.

My friend had a similar problem with his 300zx and it was the aftermarket intake that caused it. There was some sort of like air disturbance that caused his car to stall when the car was moving with the clutch in and it was fixed by like some sort of sheild around the intake.

egr valve is probably stuck open its pretty common, get the valve tube and actuating vsv all replaced and it should take car of it , it happens as the egr valve only opens at cruise like on the hiway, and when you leave the hiway it is still open so the cylinders lean out enough to kill it when you clutch in, thats my guess sight unseen but as i work in a dealership its one i see alot

Hey Im sorry about your luck. I hope you get it all figured out soon. When you say ram air, do you just have a short ram intake or some sort of actual ram air kit?
