This has happened to me many times. I start my car up and it seems the engine started, but it wont stay on. The rpm barely reaches 1k and the engine slowly shut off while making a nasty sound and the check engine light would come on. Then I restart the engine and everything's fine and no more cel. This doesn't happen everytime but once in awhile. My car is a 99 and has over 100k. What could the problem be?

clogged fuel filter?
clogged catalytic converter?
fouling spark plugs?
ignition ok?

just a few questions I would ask myself in your situation...

Sounds like a bad Idle Air Controller (IAC). If you rev the engine will it stay on?

did you guys find out what the problem is? throttle body needs cleaning?

It happened to me for the first time today, cold idle at 200 w/ rough trembling for like 5-10 seconds and dies. After a few times turning restarting and going nowhere, i revved the engine at 2000 and kept my foot there for a couple minutes, then everyting goes back to normal, as if nothing happened.

I got an I4 w/ new batteries, had oil changed and added K&N drop in last week, so maybe the ecu is adjusting to the changed air flow and the new oil?

Mines doesnt do it as much anymore... But it does drop the RPM TOOOO low when I turn the A/C on.. Could that be a sign? Because I cant up the RPM throttle line anymore. I already max it out.
