i know everyone on this forum recommends mobil 1 synthetic, but since I don't drive too much since im at school, it seems like a waste to get my oil changed every 3-4 months especially when its expensive mobil 1. and i park in a deck, and atlanta weather is pretty mild, so if im getting my oil changed every three months, probably around 1500-2000 miles, is it ok to go with generic brands?

Yes, as long as you keep a check on your oil and ensure you use a new 'reputed' filter everytime you should be good. (pls don't use fram).

I'm usin' Catrol oil right now wit a Bosch filter.
Don't like the OEM Toyota filter, cause the size of the filter is to small for the tools i have at home.
Yes don't use FRAM oil filter they suck donkey. :x
About to switch to Castrol semi-syntheic.

I'm in the same situation.

I use mobil 1 and KN oil filters. I change the oil after about 6 months or 3000 miles. I think its a much better alternative then using generic oil, and it gives me the peace of mind that I'm using synthetic

I use mobil 1, an alternative for you is to keep using the mobil 1 but dont change it every three months. Just change it at 3000k. Also on the bottle it says the oil is good for 7500k for semi synthetic (what I use). Change it every 4500k or something to be on the safe side. Im too picky so I do it every 3000k. Ive never paid attention to the 3 month thing.

Synthetic oil isnt that much more expensive, especially if you purchase it yourself.

Like what the others said "peace of mind".

The black color is because of all the detergents in the oil. It's normal

I have a question in regards to synthetic vs. regular oil. If you buy a used car that has used regular oil all its life, is it ok to change to synthetic? I heard that it messes with the seals. Just curious.

^^ SEARCH, if the seals were cracked they were cracked to begin with, and all the sludge/stuff was 'sealing' it. When you may switch, you may experience leakages that were already there to begin with. It doesn't 'lead' to new ones. But nothign wrong with dino...(i use dino on one car and synthetic on my other).
