d or 2

d or 2

Postby Guest » Sat Feb 08, 2003 9:35 pm

what is the difference between d and 2 on the automatic?
would it be bad on the engine to drive with the switch? on 2 while in residential neighborhoods?
just wondering
thanks

2 = 2nd gear is the highest gear that the transmission will engage
D = 4th gear is the highest gear that the transmission will engage
D w/ OD Off = 3rd gear is the highest gear that the transmission will engage

I don't see why you have to drive on 2.

The only times I would use 2 is when I am AutoX'ing or going down steep hill.

2nd gear would keep your rpms really high and waste gas.

use 2 and L for when you need more "pulling" power...or when going down really steep hills.

otherwise, leave it in D with normal driving. hit the O/D button around 75 or 80mph to kick it in 4th.

i assume it'd be better, as long as you don't forget to shift
you can hold the gears longer, and downshift yourself

thats basically as close as you can get to driving manual!

well, shifting manually (for the track anyways) because you can downshift for engine braking, powering out of turns (without waiting for the tranny to downshift), and whatever i said before

...or just trade in for a manual!

Not only will driving around in 2nd gear waste gas, but it's also gonna set you up for an early tranny failure. The higher rpm causes your tranny to run hotter and the low speed doesn't allow for proper cooling. Keep it in "Drive".

For all those who bought automatics! WAKE UP..you bought an automatic, not a starard/stick! There are limitations to what an automatic can do, playing around too much with the gears w/o any knowledge will reduse life in your tranny!

yah, don't do that. i used to do that with my old corodda. i used to even drop it in 2nd when i was going 40 or so. auto's not made for that kind of abuse.

Brake Torque it

Postby Chi Town Solara » Tue Feb 11, 2003 9:09 pm

well if you got an automatic like i did (i am still kicking myself) the best way to get the best launch from a standstill with an automatic is by using something called "brake torqueing" (sorry bout the spelling!) when all the magazines like caranddriver and motortrend test auto cars 0-60 they brake torque it to get a good launch. to do this hold the brake with your left foot, and then get the rpms up to about 3000. release the brake and lay into the throttle. now it does help if u have high performance tires so u get less wheel spin on launch but even with stock u will get better ¼ mile times.

Ehh you really don't wanna power brake up to 3000 rpm. Thats ALOT of stress on your tranny. I've been successful at up to 1800rpms, after that i don't wanna risk it. I rarely do it too because its terrible for the tranny.

Anyone wanna explain boost braking?
