Question about tranny / right front wheel

Question about tranny / right front wheel

Postby aleath » Mon Feb 17, 2003 10:41 am

I've got about 6600 miles on my Solara now and its bumping a bit when I slow down to a stop. Its an automatic and it does it when it downshifts from 2nd to 1st -- around 22mph, but its just slightly noticeable. It doesn't even do it all the time, only when I am braking lightly.. IF then. I just don't want this to be a small problem I ignore only to get bigger down the road.

Also, just recently I have started to hear a faint hum from the front right tire when I am driving under 30mph. It seems to do it more frequently when I am on rough roads, corners, etc..

Anyone have any ideas?

for the first part, i'd say bring it to a dealer.
for the second, check the tire for anything lodeged in the tread and also check the air pressure in it.

i have the exact same problem! only happens once in a while, but sometimes its a pretty harsh downshift
i took it to my dealer, they took it for a road test and of course it didn't happen! they think im insane...

i'm not a mechanic but from seeing this at work a lot it may be that ur rotors are a little warped or are starting to, nothing to be alarmed about.... its not at the point to where u need to machine them, u onyl need to do that when ur steering wheel shakes when u apply the brakes at high speed... :)

Yea I haven't taken it to the dealer yet, but I bet the same thing that happened to NASTY will happen to me.. heh. Anyway I check my tire pressure every time I was my car which is about every two weeks or less. Regarding something stuck in the tread.. I checked to make sure and there was nothing.

I don't think its my rotors since it only does it when its downshifting, no other time.

I dunno I should look through the TSBs and see if I can find anything regarding it.

Maybe Flipside could enlighten us as to what the problem could be? :D

Auto Tranny

Postby Anthony » Tue Sep 09, 2003 4:48 pm

I have a 2002 V6 with an automatic transmission and I also get that harder than normal downshift from 2nd to 1st sometimes. Anyone else out there get that?

Also, it sometimes seems like the transmission is fishing for the right gear (between 3rd and overdrive). Is this normal? This just recently started happening after a long trip on the freeway at a relatively high speed. Is it possible that it takes a while for the transmission to readjust its shift points for city driving??

I have a 2002 i-4 and i get that harsh down shift from 2nd to 1st sometimes also. When i spoke to the dealer about this they told me that its normal to a automatic to down shift like that. It will downshift harsh cuz it thinks that your about to stop just like if you were to slow down quicker then normal in a stick you would down shift. its nothing to be alarmed about.

as for the humming i would bring that to the dealer. it can be the hub bearing but i really highly doubt that.

if all comes to worst i would just bring it to the dealer to have them road test before you starting taking things apart to examine the problem.
