damage to car
-small penny dent rear quarter
-4" long scrapes on rear bumper
-keyed scratch length of drivers side
-replace drivers side view mirror
-repair dent in hood from mirror hitting it after sideswiped..

file insurance claim

take it to top shop in area (supposedly)

Insurance pays out $4500 for repairs

get my car yesterday..orange peel everywhere..im friggin pissed..
drop it off again..wet sanded for 8+ hrs more supposedly
still minor to moderate orange in places

so its going back again monday..here is my question...do i make keep wetsanding till i get factory finish over the whole car? i would assume so but i would like anyone that works in a body shop to chime in please

car loks good no doubt but in bright sunlight from an angle my car does not have that smooth factory shine..everyone tells me im crazy in my house but everyone in my house would have taken the car the first time around..they have no clue...opinions??

I think you answered your own question! $4500 is not a cheap amount, they need to earn their keep IMO. GL

Factory Finish

Postby PDX SuperSolara » Fri Aug 04, 2006 2:49 pm

Well you can't gat a factory finish anywhere but the factory. If they are spending a great deal of time wet sanding and still can't get a good finish then they didn't paint it properly or didn't prime it properly. Lousy primer equals a lousy finish.

It is doable. The repair to my passenger rear quarter panel looks perfect. My work was done at a dealership, but there is no reason why any shop shouldnt be able to match the color and do a decent job of applying it, especially for $4500.

in here may lie my problem...to me a finish is either factory smooth or it isnt..what is in between..?? again finish..not color match/tone..

also after there last wet sand most of the orange peel is minimized so i believe the undercoats are ok??

again this stuff is only distinguishable in bright sun at an angle..straight on looks peechy..but most of what you see when you look at a car is...during the day..and at an angle so.....

I have had to have over 1/2 of my car re-painted and have had noe of the issues you mention. My paint job was done at a dealership. My suggestion is to get your money back and take it to a dealership to get it done.

you can get a factory finish somewhere other than the factory... these guys winning car shows and people with '32 roadsters have far better than factory and i know damn well they didnt pay to have an assembly line modded for their paint job. You just have to get someone that know what the hell they're doing... and for 4500 you should expect someone that REALLY knows what they're doing... unless of course you painted it a different color and had them pull the engine to do under the hood and all that jazz

Yeah I mean to me, 10k paint jobas belong on show cars and everything, you should be able to get beter than factory for even a few grand under that, and I'm tlaking about the type of places people will come to who live even 20 hours or more away, the places that have reputations and do amazing work. But for the next step under that, the equalling factory paint level, I say 4.5k is plenty to get what you're looking for. If they can't do it, go on a car forum for your area and ask for the best paint jobs. If I ever need to paint my car there's two places I'll go down here in florida, one being about an hour and a half away and one being about 2 and a half hours away. There are about 20 body shops within 5 minutes of my house and within an hour I don't think I can even count. But I'll go to one of those places because I know it's worth it. So ask around and ye shall receive. I would just take it elsewhere because at this point, it seems like no matter how much they buff/wet sand it, it's not going to look right.

From a reputed shop- doable. I have had my es and my old celica repainted before. On the celica, the fit/finish came like i had taken great care of my OEM color! It is possible. But the shop needs to reputed and knowing of what they are doing and of your expectations.

for that money you shouldn't have any of these:

no orange peel effect
no over sprays
paint should match all around

if you are unsatisfied about the work, take it back
