Spark plug problem, help needed pretty urgently

Spark plug problem, help needed pretty urgently

Postby methyl mike » Wed Dec 06, 2006 6:38 pm

Ok so as I said in my last thread, I had a spark plug I could not get out. Well today I took her to toyota, and paid 60 bucks for the guys to remove the piece of spark plug wire from my plug. I took the car home, got the plug out, and put in a brand new spark plug from the dealership, along with a brand new set of wires from toyota. Start my car, same problem! So I took the wire off cylinder 6, and stuck a spark plug in the end of it, to check spark you know? And its not getting spark! My engine or whatever is not sending spark to cylinder 6, the rest work fine. WTF>?!>?!>!>! DOes anybody know what might haVe fouled? Basically, a month ago my car ran fine, then it had like this intermittant problem of not working right, I figured out it was the wire on cylinder 6. Sometimes the wire made contact, and when it did car ran fine, when it wasnt making contact the cylinder would go dead. So with the new plug and new wires, why is there no spark to cylinder 6???

I was guessing that, they are a hundred bucks, and I think the guy said ours cars use three, but which one is for cylinder 6? Also, if a coil went out, wouldnt it kill 2 cylinders, since there is only 3???

If you have a Haynes manual you could look at the numberin' of the cylinders.
Our coil packs are on the front of the car, in other words the black box, on the front three cylinders.
Each of those spark plug wires goes to a rear cylinder.
If you need i can look up what the number of the cylinders are when i get home from school....

When you took out the old plug was there any oil on it? It could be just the coil pack, maybe an injector, or even the tube seal.

The rear bank is numbered 2 4 6 Im having problems with cylinder 6, its the first black box on the left, well thats where the spark plug wire goes anyway. When I took the plug out, there was some black, gunk or something, on the front of it, it looked like oil.

thats a fouling plug...

when was the last time you had an engine flush?

ok, the guys are right, it can be a bad coil pack.

That black sut you got on the plug is oil/gas residue, impeding the plug from sparking properly, thus a loss in power. This is mostly evident when an engine has carbon buildup. An engine flush can eliminate the carbon buildup.

Just another possibility, Im not a mechanic... but that happened to my last ride.
Geeks get it done, while Nerds whimper and call for mommie.

Try Seafoaming it, aka engine flush. Pour seafoam into a cup and let it get sucked up by the brake line and have a buddy keep the revs up. See what happens, it may eliminate the problem may not but worth a shot.

Well, the problem now is that there is no spark going to cylinder 6, so I am guessing this is a bad coil pack? Anybody know how to replace these things?

it should be just one 10mm bolt and disconnecting the connectors off the coil.

Ok a mechanic came over and basically unplugged the wire from cylinder 6, and stuck in a screwdriver, and i started my car and when he ground it against a piece of metal there was spark, so it would seem there is spark to cylinder 6. Tomorrow im taking my car to a friend of mine who works at pep boys to check my trouble codes, ill update you guys then.
