Throttle lag=bad tranny???

Throttle lag=bad tranny???

Postby solaraluv » Tue Jan 09, 2007 9:36 am

I got off the phne with a service advisor at my local Toyota dealer and I had explained to him about the lag that I get at times. Now I know this issue has been discussed before about this problem with the gen 1 v6, but I just cant get over the fact that this dude automatically assumed it was may tranny without evern looking at the car! I have been driving log enough and had many cars to know when the tranny is on its was out. Can someone please get me some info that will resolve this matter, I want to go to the dealer today at some point and I just want to have all the right info. Thanks

Have you checked your fuel filter, or air filter.
That might cause some lag.
I think i'm right.....
I'm only guessin' from what you have said.

Trans slip

Postby PDX SuperSolara » Mon Feb 19, 2007 2:55 pm

If you don't have enough fluid in your automatic transmission it will slip sometimes or have a delay engaging gears. Check that first. On several occations I have had a customer come in for a transmission replacement because the dealer or another shop said it needed one, just to find a low fluid level.

If that's not it, the A541E transmission has been known to fail in odd ways, like no upshift or downshift, or a bad ECU (the ECU controls shifts). Usually they don't just wear out. They just fail in weird ways, though the dealer is just a glorified parts exchanger, they won't ever rebuild a tranny they put in only a factory reman unit so the dealer will never be able to tell you why it failed if it was internal. The ECU is replaced under warranty though for 8 years or 80K miles due to known problems. I've had mine done.

Since you'll be doing the rest of the tune up anyway, another fuel fitler wouldn't be a bad idea; you never know if you've picked up some junk in there. Also, have you ever done a trans service? I know mine has a drain plug, and I plan on using it often (to get the most life out of the filter); old nasty fluid has been known to put drag on an engine, which could make it feel sluggish. Trans services are probably the most overlooked maintenance procedures out there, and they go a long way in preventing future problems.
