Transponder

Transponder

Postby solaratony » Fri Jan 19, 2007 9:52 am

I have looked through the forums, and really couldn't find a straight answer. I was wondering how much it costs to have the transponder reprogrammed at a dealer(average $). I bought my car used and it only came with a Valet(or Sub) key. I'm sure you all know that this means I can't reprogram the key myself. I really don't like only having one key, so if I had idea how much it costs to get a new master key, that'd be great.

The other reason I am wondering is that after some very crappy winter weather here in Oklahoma, I really want a Remote Start. I just know that a stereo place or something will need a spare key or at least the master to get one to work.

So, my other question is whether or not the transonder can be completely disabled, to where I wouldn't need a special key to start it. I live in a small town, so I don't really need the transponder.

Any Input would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. I have a 99 SLE V6.

pricing will range from dealership to dealership, i'm sure. why don't you just call your local Toyota dealership and ask them...? for a key plus programming would probably be anywhere from $80+.

for the remote start to work a DEI (Directed Electronics) module 555U or 555X would have to be used with whatever remote start system you decide to go with. a popular choice is the Clifford Matrix 3.5 or 50.5 since it functions as an alarm as well. Clifford is a product of DEI as well; so is Viper, Python, Sidewinder, Hornet, Valet, etc. each of these brands offer a remote start system with an alarm. i'm not a big fan of "stand-alone remote start" systems.

the transponder cannot be disabled. with DEI module 555U you will have to sacrifice a key to be put INTO THE MODULE and wired with the remote start. with DEI module 555X you won't need to sacrifice a key--the bypass will be wired in, and with programming, bypass your transponder signal when the remote start process occurs.

check you local install shops to see if they carry either DEI module 555U or 555X.

Yeah, I've been meaning to call a dealer(although the closest one is 65 miles away) but every time I think about I can't or don't feel like it.

I remember now that I had heard of something to bypass the transponder for a remote start, so I will call the stereo place soon.

Also, are you saying that the dealer can give me a new master key if I don't have one? I kinda got the impression that you can give them your VIN number and they'll make you a new one. Is that right?

I really appreciate your answering my questions, Krook. Thanks

yeah they (the dealership) can get you a Master Key if you provide them with your VIN. also, whoever sold you the car with only the Valet key, uh...sucks. :D why didn't they get you a Master Key??? usually the master keys also come with a serial number; a small silver tab on a keyring. i think you can use this to duplicate keys as well.

I bought the car from a tiny dealer that only had like 20 cars. The owner's manual was also missing, which is why I was clueless to the fact that all I had was a Valet key for the first year I owned it. But I got a really good deal!!!!! :D
