Hey all. My speedo just stopped working and I basically drive very slow cuz it revs up high without shifting, since I'm guessing wihtout the vss working it doesn't know when to shift. It has happened before, and even thrown a CEL, but I cleared it, and a month later voila, it's back.

Was wondering if I replace the VSS would it fix problem, and also, which speed sensor? I assume the one on the transaxle since that makes sense...shifting problems and all. The one in the dash only controls the speedo cluster, no?

Help, anyone, tomorrow going to buy replacement from dealer if it'll work.

BTW, just installed CP-E intake, but since I've had this exact problem before I installed it (the speedo always came back to life, now it just sits at 0 and jumps now and then) I assume they are not linked.

You might have a blown fuse thats keeping the car from functioning.
That or you have a hot wire.. Is your car underwarranttee? What did you do before it started to happen?

No, unfortunately it's not under warranty. Bought it used with 93k on it. It first happened probably two months ago, nothing done, but everytime it happened it was around when the tank was near empty. This time, nothing changed (aside from the cp-e) near empty and bam, needle to 0 and really erractic shifting and revving. You don't think it's the VSS as the code says?

VSS might be a fault from something else. Sounds more like you have a hot wire as the fuel goes down causeing the low gas switch to activate and setting that hot wire off.

The low fuel light never comes on, it doesn't get that low. Is that what you mean? Sorry, not really sure what a hot wire is, is that just a short in the line somewhere? It happened this time with a 1/4 tank left. How would I test for a hot wire? Voltmeter?

Dumb question, but would changing the speed sensor fix a short in the circuit?

those are the possible problems.. but start with cleaning the speed sensors, they can be just dirty.
