100K Mile Update

100K Mile Update

Postby Jai_Jai_Binks » Tue Feb 06, 2007 3:16 pm

Here in my 100K mile update for my 'lara. (those with over 100K you can add your stories here as well) - this would be a great search feature for those wanting to know common problems (if any) you all encountered.

I've personally driven 99.99% of the 100K miles myself (minus 50-100 miles here and there driven by either my sister or wifee). The one reason i jumped on this car was the 5sfe engine. I've had a celica with 5sfe engine and that was rock solid, so when it came time to go from celica, solara was the natural choice.

Thus far (KNOCK ON WOOD), these are the problems I've personally incured:
1. The stock bridgestone potenza's that came from toyota were crap. I think before I hit 20K miles, those were worn out. (i've had Khumo's w/ my Konig's and those lasted longer than what toyota gave with this car)
2. The drivers side seat belt clip makes a tad bit noice at times (like virbrations)...I've learnt that a little lubrication solves this issue.
3. My headlights (drivers) has burnt out twice!!! (woopeedooo)
4. The lights behind the HVAC controls went out at 90K, I was able to get the unit out, but getting the plating off was a ??- thankfully a few great pm's from john solved this issue as well.
5. The passanger seat has now started to vibrate, I've learnt that at the position closest and farthest the seat vibrates- anything otherwise and the problem is solved....
6. My left coin-holder isn't exactly flush. I suspect this to be my fault from the time i re-wired the fogs.
7. Ivory interior is a touch to keep it looking ivory white. I think over the years, the cloth seats are looking gray and the interior is looking more egg-white than ivory. Even detailing doesn't bring back OEM'ness
8. Front side of the car by fog's i've noted small rock chip spots with brown spots (rust), its there when the car is dirty, but a clean wash and wipe takes them off.
9. My arm rest has a perm. dent in the place where my elbow rests. At first it annoyed me. But now i see this like this car fitting me like a glove.
10. RSB creeking during winter months (esp in the morning time)...Its something i've come to live with. This is non-existant for summer months. Thankfully i live in texas.

Engine/tranny wise - its rock solid. I've never been more impressed with a Toyota more so than with my solara and we have had toyota's all our life - normally as they age, they would have become more noisey or have showed their age. This one has aged gracefully. It still drives and rides like the day she came off the Ontario plant. I can still easily attain 32mpg's driving at 70mph (or more if i drive like a grandma). Stock struts are still holding strong (even for my lowered trd springs ever after all this time). Would i do this all over again - you bet i would! :D

creaky RSB

cool on the 1st 100k.

my first 100k were only 1% me (bought it at 99k)

I know you won;t do it untill summer, when it's warm, and then you'll forget, but if you lube up the 2 attach brackets for the RSB it'll stop squeaking.

^^ LOL at you all. I wanted to start this thread cus' we hear a lot about the avalon tranny issues, and other problems toyota is currently plagued with (recall's and TSB's). Its nice to hear it from people, at least to the newbies who didn't buy the gen 1/1.5 brand new and for them it was either a hand-me-down or a used car.

I bought my 99 Solara SLE (auto) in June 2004 with 29K. I know have 119K. It has been stock the whole time, with the exception of 19" Niche F-16s. Here is what I have had to do to it:

Front Struts around 60K miles (before I knew about the bad mounts). Then front struts and mounts around 85K miles (struts replaced free under lifetime warranty).
O2 sensor around 90K
Timing belt and water pump at 95K miles
Rear struts and mounts at 115K
Now I am looking at replacing all the control arm and strut mount bushings since i still have the knocking on uneven surfaces in the back.

Besides the piece of crap suspension system on this car, it has been great mechanically, and for 120K miles and paid off, I cant wait for winter to be over and throw the Niches back on for another year!

I have several paint chips on the black hood from lots of highway driving.

Yes the timing was replaced with the other drive belts (a/c fan belt, p/steering belt, alternator belt) at the deaership. I believe the total cost was in the $235-245 ballpark. Toyota has coupons in the summer for $199 timing service, the rest of the belts replacements are cost of belt only..no labor!

99 SLE V6
About 95,000 miles, bought the car used at 73,000

The only big repair ive had was replacing the rear brake lines which broke at around 90,000 miles.

As for the little things:
-RSB creaking
-Headlight yellowing /fogging
-Rear cup holder breaking although at no fault of toyota just me
-CDs skip a lot over bumps but thats been happening from the start with the stock HU
-Driver door lock would not engage fully when pressed, but this just needed to be lubed up...works fine now

Otherwise everythings pretty good, still gotta get the timing belt/pump/drive belts done this summer.
