LR Sliding Pin Broke - Can't get out of Torque Plate - Help

Postby tboidsc » Mon Apr 21, 2008 8:57 am

Was changing my brakes this past weekend and on the last wheel, the sliding pin with the rubber bushing (on the torque plate) broke when I was trying to loosen it. I Figured, no big deal, I would just pull out the rest and buy a new one from Toyota. Low an behold, I can't seem to get the rest of the pin out of the caliper. Any suggestions?

I tried a little 6-in-1 oil and vise grips on the nub. I do not have a table vise, therefore am limited to whatever torque my arms can apply. I thought that maybe heating it may work, but I do not have a propane torch either, and not sure that this would even work if I got one.

At this moment, I have the torque plate in the freezer, thinking that this may help. Please let me know any other suggestions. Thank you

wait...what is a torque plate? you mean the caliper bracket?

if the sliding pin is stuck in there, there's pretty much no way of getting it out....go pick up a new one from toyota (or aftermarket) along with a new sliding pin

Torch and hammer...that's all I can say...except instead of propane we used acetelyne and a massive hammer.

That's how we got the bracket bolt off of a friend's Sentra. Heat it up and just go to town on it. Eventually it'll come loose and just fall off (the bracket). Then grab yourself a pair of pliers and spin the bolt off.

I can try heat, but not sure how a hammer will help. The top of the pin, Ithreaded side) broke off, all that is left is about 1/2" of the pin sticking out of the torque plate, caliper bracket.

I fiure heat would melt the rubber inside and then with a pair if vise grips, it may be able to be pulled out.

I was trying to a void having to by a new bracket.

Maybe I can bring it to a local brake shop and they would be willing to take a crack at it. They must come across this all the time.

Thanx
