toyota says to get your engine coolant flushed. is this the same as your radiator fluid? i would assume so, but i've been wrong before.

yup..the radiator is a major part of your coolant system. Engine coolant and radiator fluid are one and the same. there's a thread in DIY that gives details on how flush your engine coolant.

toyota schedules the engine coolant flush for every 30K miles. here's a link to a service schedule: http://www.jamestoyota.com/rec_service_print.html

Engine Flush??

Postby Solaraman » Sun Mar 14, 2004 1:43 am

I'm a little confused with some terminology. Is an Engine Flush the same as a Coolant Flush or does it include other things?

i just did it today, just 20 miles over 30k,somehow i only can found the front engine block plug, i can't seem to find the rear one.

So i drained out the from the radiator plug and the front engine block.

After the coolant was out, filled with plain water, flushed out the water then refilled the red coolant. It took 1 bottle of OEM coolant, then i filled with water into the empited bottle so it can be 50/50. But somehow while i put into half of the water, then it's full. (it doesn't seem to be 9.2 at all!)

So anyway, i tried to test drive it, and then i heard this water flusing noise in the car whenever i hit gas from stop.

Anyone know why?

the engine flush cleans out the engine before you change your oil. i guess to reduce the sludge

the coolant flush i guess preps the radiator for the new coolant. i used it in my car but i didnt notice any differece. i dont think its a big deal to use the coolant flush

the toyota red is a straight coolant. you have to mix in the water yourself

Just to be on the safe - i do my radiator flush before every summer every year! I know the red toyota coolant is good for three years..and this might be an overkill...but it did the same on my celica..and for being a 14 yr old car...there was NOTHING that was changed on the cooling system (minus the hoses at 10 yrs and the coolant yearly). It never overheated ever!

Might be some air in the system now. Since it's hard to get every last drop out of the system, I would suggest flushing the system with water until it runs clear out of the car (with the car running and a hose feeding the radiator). Next drain out all of the water you can, then add the amount of antifreeze that is equivalent to 50% of the capacity of the system, then finish filling with water. This way you get the proper 50/50 mixture.

in the Haynes manual it says to remove the temperature gauge in order to flush the system. is this necessary, or not really?
