Hello!!!

Postby SMiko1 » Sat Jul 19, 2003 8:23 pm

Greetings and salutations,

I just bought a 2000 Solara SLE V6 with 6-disc changer and moonroof and 28,000 miles for the low, low, ultra-low price of $13,900 (At least I THINK that's a good price...?). I googled up Solara and am happy to find an active community for Solara owners.

I am really happy with the car so far, but I have a couple of questions I hope you guys can answer.

1) I'm getting a rattle from the right side of the interior. This rattle is more maddening due to the otherwise silent interior of my new Solara. Anyone have this problem? I searched the forums and saw the lock the glovebox and move the seatback possible fixes, but neither of those worked for me. Any ideas?

2) Does anyone have a good recommendation for a car cover for the Solara? I have to park the car in a certain spot (under a tree) and leaves and crap (literally and figuratively) fall on my car every night. Thankfully no sap, but I'm tired of washing my car every day! I have 2 main options; 1) find a good car cover OR 2) show that tree a little CHAINSAW MADNESS!!. Option 2 will very likely get me kicked out of my place, so I'm hoping someone here has bought a car cover for their Solara that they really like.

AND FINALLY

3) Extended warranties. Has anyone here bought an extended warranty for their car? I have 4 months left on the factory warranty and I am considering my options. I live in Florida so I would have to buy a Toyota warranty from Southeast Toyota Distributors, which I am told is the kind of organization Satan would run if he were in the car business. Anyone bought a warranty from these guys? Anyone bought a 3-rd party extended warranty? What has your experience been?

I'm glad to be here and thanks for any information you may have,

Seann :bday:

ok the rattling noise still has to do with the seat or glove box...ask yanks0114 for more help...

the car cover situation is one i also had to address...i got mine from http://www.californiacarcover.com...this place is pretty expensive but welllllll worth it!!!! they can customize the cover for our car and any accessories you might have on it (eg: bodykits, spoilers, etc.) eventually u will see my car and know why i have spent $$$ on the cover but you will also see its well worth it! (by the way you can also choose color, embroidery, and material)

finally, welcome to the community!

Well....if there's a rattling..noise in ur car..i would ask whereever u bought the car from...since u got the car used...if the car was modified in any way....ever since my car was taken apart to run new wires for my subs and other audio equipment....parts of my panel started to rattle....same with when i got my springs put in....basically..once u take something apart...the likelihood that something will rattle....increases.....i've never heard of the seats or the glove box...having problems..and my car is a 99.....

Rattle

Postby G_Unit » Sun Jul 20, 2003 2:09 pm

I have the noise as well, I know my problem is due from the bent tsw wheel....but temporary fixes, can come from moving the passenger seat forward, which will tighten the spring which i think might be making the niose, try it, thats what i do to get rid of the niose, and I nly notice the noise when no one else is in the car.

In reference to extended warranties. I would suggest you to call the 800 number or toyota and have your VIN handy. They will take down your info and tell you to go to the nerest dealership (to verify your odometer). I have ex. warrantiers on all my cars (except my celica). Last month my 6 cd changer went out...paid $25 to get a new cd magazine and some internal pully that was gone...last year 6 o2 sensors were gone on my Es...paid 25 to get em replaced...also my tranny was leaking..paid $25 for that to be repaired..hence, i'd would highly suggest it!

DO NOT BUY A 3RD PARTY EXTENDED WARRANTY!!!

i can't stress that enough.
get a toyota extended warranty. they're not fun to deal with (from my point of view) but they cover a lot of stuff.

i get a buzz from the driver's side rear window moulding. drives me nuts too, but i crammed some paper in there and that helps. i guess a better alternative would be some kind of insulating foam strips like the kind used for sealing doors, A/C units and stuffing it in there with a credit card. just have someone drive around while you look for the buzz and see if you can isolate what's causing it. good luck!

rattle

Postby aerostar33 » Mon Jul 21, 2003 8:33 am

I had a rattle too on my '03 that wasnt the glovebox or the seat rails. I brought it back to the dealer and they fixed it under warranty. They said it was some kind of plastic clip somewhere that broke on the body? Anyway that was two weeks ago and I have had no rattles since (knock on wood).

ive narrowed the possibilites down a bit. i dont think its from the passenger door anymore, but rather from under the passenger SRS bag is. its sort of behind the glovebox area. ive tried with teh glovebox open and with my hand on it, but it still makes hte noise, so i know its something inside there. i dont have a clue how to get to it tho. the noise only comes at 2000 rpm

Solara owning studs (and studettes),

I appreciate the quick responses and warm welcomes.

xXsolaraXx: What kind of cover did you buy?( What material; Evolution 4, Noah, Sunbrella, etc.) Do you keep your car outdoors? I have to, so any car cover I get needs to handle bad weather. Are you happy with your cover? I appreciate the link to the thread on the rattle, but I read all the existing threads on the subject and was hoping for some new input.

Hari Trivedi: I'm starting to think the rattle is a Japanese conspiracy to drive us mad! Then they can step in and rule the world! AHAHAHAHAHA!!! (Ahem...) I still can't find the rattle. The beat-the-dash method didn't work. I am at my wits end and according to my owner's manual, squeaks and rattles are only covered under factory warranty for the first 12 months/12,000 miles. I will continue my search and report back the findings.

jhbhatia: I want to get the Toyota warranty, but since I live in Florida I am unfortunately under the monopolistic thumb of our regional distributor, Southeast Toyota Distributors. They sell their own warranty (not Toyota Financial Services). In fact, Toyota won't even sell you their warranty at all if you live in a STD (STD? hmmm...) state, even if you say "Pretty Please!!!" I am asking if anyone else lives under the rule of the overlords (STD) like myself and, if so, if they know if STD warranties are as good as Toyota Financial Services warranties. They are supposed to be equivalent (use Toyota dealers for service, etc.) but who knows? Maybe some mechanics out there who can give me a shout out on that.

DavPak: Do all 3rd Party Warranties suck? I've heard that GE has a good warranty. Talk to me, my brotherman. I'm so confused about the warranty options and I've heard so many horror stories about warranty claims being denied for completely crazy reasons that I want to look (and look and look and...) before I leap to make sure I don't get screwed.

Everyone else: Hi!!! :bday: Thanks for the warm welcome!!!

Yeah, little noises and rattles can drive you nuts...here are two that I found:

1. The seat belt anchor that is located on the pillar

-I find that sometimes there is a rattle that comes from inside the anchor housing. It comes and goes and is dependent upon the angle of the plastic arm that extends the seat belt forward so that you can reach it easier. There is something that looks like a washer inside the housing that moves and rattles. I opted to leave it alone since I don't want to mess with something as important as a seat belt.

2. Side window air duct cover

-the air duct cover that is on the dash that blows air on the side window might be a bit loose and then it will make a cracking noise.

its not so much that the sound bugs me, i always roll with the windows down and music up 8) but when i go to sell my car, i dont want the person to think there is something wrong with it, since rattling can be characteristic of a bigger problem. of course all of us know that its just minor interior things, but an average schmoe might think its an engine problem or something. u kno how ppl can get paranoid when buying a car....i know i was. and of course, anything i tell the buyer is goign to brushed off as "oh yea he just wants to sell me the car, he must be lying." so thats why i really want to get it fixed. make sense?
