Any Gen 1's w/o sludge??

Hello guys, I have been doing a lot of searching lately and I am aware of the sludge issue but was just wondering if you guys think it's even possible to buy a nice gen 1-1.5 w/o sludge? Is it just prone on *every 1fmze engine or just some. Because in my price range (4-5k) there are a lot of nice ones that have right around 100,000 miles on them or even a tad more and I was just thinking that maybe if the thing has lasted this long maybe it could keep going good for awhile, especially if I used synthetic oil. Also, one more quick question: Is it possible to just pop off the oil fill cap see if the motor has sludge or not? Well let me know what you guys think. I would love to own one of these cars because everyone swears by the reliability so if I could just get around the sludge issue I would have a nice long-term vehicle.

Sludge only occurs in the cars belonging to the slow minded people who don't change their oil on time. Buying a used car, you can never really tell until you get it home and pull the valve covers off.

I've worked on around 15 1MZ's from 94-03 Camry's/Solara's, and not one had sludge of any sort.

no sludge here that i know of -- mine's a '99 sle that my parents bought new and sold to me when they got a new camry (this was almost 3 1/2 years ago).

at 136k and some change (about 40k of which i've put on it), it drives as nice as it always has.

as others have said, i think it's all about the oil changes.
