Take out the ash tray and put like two fingers inside against the top and pull, the dash should come out completely.

That's the center console, not the DASHBOARD.

What kind of work are you doin'??
I had to replace my dash after my car had gotten broken into......
It took me and my friend about 6 hours ish.

1. Disconnect the battery.
2. Wait a couple of hours.
3. Remove the center console, the center black dash piece.
4. Remove the radio.
5. You can unscrew the A/C control panel, and have it restin' on the shifter area.
6. Remove the glovebox.
7. Remove the driver dash lower panel includin' the metal plate.
8. There should be a bolt that is 10mm on the right side [passenger side] there will be a plastic plug coverin' it.
9. Look at the above vent on the passenger side, ther should be a a screw.
10. This would make takin' the dash out easier, unbolt the steerin' wheel.
11. Disconnect the passenger airbag.

I think i'm missin' some steps.
Be sure to label all the plugs on the driver kick panel and passenger panel.
PM if you need help.

You are missing some steps. You HAVE to remove the steering wheel because there is a bolt right behind the gauge cluster and I'm pretty sure you can't get the gauge cluster out with the steering wheel in place. Plus the bolt inside the side vent on top of the dashboard is on the driver's side, although there may be one on the passenger side too. The gauge cluster has three connectors, but they only go one way. Otherwise 4 screws hold it in place, IIRC. Also the glove box won't come out unless you at least move part of the door sill out of the way. Don't forget to put it back when you shut the door because if it gets caught in the door it could bend the plastic, messing it up. This happened to me. Fortunately, it was on a donor car. There is also a little black kick panel under the glove box, I think that has to come out too, in order to get to things.

I can't remember any more at the moment, but you can see some pictures on my website. It is www.ozone1000.com. You have to go to the Corolla section though, not the Solara section, and look under the V6 swap. I did not put complete instructions on how to remove the dash, but there are pictures so you can get an idea. There is a lot of wiring there that is very hard to remove, but hopefully you won't have to remove it to get the part you want.

Good luck.

ozone..thank you!...i have now read through a bunch of your pages and i think your project is awesome!! keep up the good work!

back to the dash...i have removed the gauges without removing steering wheel with no problem. my question is can the dash come out with steering wheel still intact? after seeing your images i am not sure. seems very complicated removing airbag etc....isnt there a way to just drop the steering column?

There is a bolt at the bottom of the gauge cluster area.
You don't need to remove the steerin' wheel, you can unbolt it from the dash brace.

so after i unbolt it, the dash should pull out with steering wheel on...maybe if i turn it inward towards the seats it should right?

Yeah, the steerin' wheel will get in the way of the lower half of the dash.
So when you unbolt the steerin' wheel, let it rest on the driver seat.
Then you'll be able to get the dash out.

Thanks for all your help with this...i was able to remove the dash

i would just like to add the following to make it easier for anyone else who needs to do this one day

1. Disconnect the battery.
2. Remove the center console, the center black dash piece.
3. Remove the radio.
4. You can unscrew the A/C control panel, and have it restin' on the shifter area.
(i suggest removing it completly so that nothing is in the way when pulling out the dash)
5. Remove the center console around shifter (also helps)
6. Remove the glovebox (5 screws)..remove lower plastic panel as well
7.Disconnect the passenger airbag. (after about 30-60 min of battery being disconnected)
8. unbolt the 2 14mm bolt holding airbag to frame (the airbag is actually attached to the dash)
9. Remove the driver dash lower panel includin' the metal plate.
10. There should be a bolt that is 10mm on the LEFT side [driver side] there will be a plastic plug coverin' it.
11. Look at the above vent on the passenger side, ther should be a a screw. (there is NONE on driver side vent)
12. Remove gauge cluster besel and gauge cluster itself (pull from top forward and remove the 3 plugs)
13.Remove 10 mm nut behind where the gauge cluster was
13b. Remove the 4 17mm nuts holding the steering column to frame under dash...careful as steering wheel may hit you on the head lol. Let it sit on driver seat
14. I suggest removing the 2 A pillars on each side as these will also get in your way
15. Cables for e brake, radio and certain others must be unplugged as they will not allow dash to lift up
16. I also removed the 10 mm holding in ground wire harness on each side by kick panels which allowed harness to be completly removed as this will also hold back the dash

I think thats everything...it's actually easier than i thought. putting everything back takes a bit longer since you will want to make sure that everything is plugged back in and all screws are back in place
removal took me about 1 hr and 30 min
putting it all back was maybe about 2 hours
