Tinting & NJ inspection

Tinting & NJ inspection

What is the lowest percentage of tint that can be added to the driver and passenger's windows in NJ and have it still pass inspection?

All of those places are in North Jersey, I'm South... No tint is legal at all? That's BS. I thought it was something like 32% was the lowest, I just wanted to make sure, but none sounds ludicrous.

TRUST ME...In all of new Jersey, you are allowed to have any tint you'd like on the rear windshield, and the rear windows. NO tint is allowed on the Driver and Passenger windows, and you can have 5 inches down from the top of the front windshield. The only figure Im not positive about is the 5 inches on the front, it may be 4 or 6.

According to the New Jersey drivers manual, they prohibit add-on tint to the windshield and front side windows. So the way I would interpret the rule is, if your windshield comes with a 5-6 inch strip of tint at the top, your ok. Similarly, if your front side windows come with a factory tint, I would guess you'd be ok there too. However the factory tint on front windows I believe is regulated by US DOT or someone like that to 7% (I think) so if you're driving around with 35%, expect a hasle. The windows on my Solara were tinted 7% from the factory (hardly looks tinted).

I added 35% tint in Geargia. When I moved to Maryland, I thought it would be ok since the requirement in MD is 35% max. It tested at 42%, that's when I figured out it had factory 7% tint. I had to remove the tint and put 25% on to equal 32%. -JoeB

Um...if all factories tinted windows at 7%....you wouldn't be able to see thru any car windows :o Sounds like you mean 93%?

California law has the front set as ILLEGAL and the rear/rearsides at any darkness... but almost every I know has the front tint.... it's useless for a coupe to only have the back tinted......... It's a 70$ fine here... I don't know about over there.

There's only 2 guys I know that chickened out and get the absolute lightest tint for the front... =x

Flash, actually the percentage value is the amount of tint, the amount it blocks the light. If you go into any tint shop, look at the 25% tint, then look at the 50% tint. The 50% tint is significantly darker. 7% is a very light tint. -JoeB
