Engine won't turn off!

Engine won't turn off!

Postby dinoxor » Tue Apr 23, 2013 6:11 pm

I went to pick up some food today and when I went back to my car and turned the key, i noticed a somewhat high pitch noise coming from the engine bay.
So my first reaction was to turn the engine off.

However when I turn the key to the off position, you can still hear the engine still running but it's slightly quieter, but running.
Everything was off including the tachometer.

So I pulled the key out, everything electrical was off except for the engine...
However when I place the key back in and into the acc position, the tachometer sweeps to my normal idle rpm.

I placed the key to off and acc many times and didn't want to crank the engine while the engine was still running since that might ruin my starter.
So I place the key back into the acc position and drove around the parking lot for a while and eventually the high pitch noise disappeared.
I turned the key to the off position and the engine finally turned off!

Has this ever happened to anyone before?
I ruled out my starter since it works fine but I think it might be my ignition switch?
Is this a sign that it's failing prematurely and should I replace it?
Any input will help, thanks!

Do you have a remote starter installed in your car? If so, that would be a good place to start.

If you don't have one of those, then I'd have your ignition switch replaced. What happened there is ONE of the two ignition wires at the ignition barrel was still powered up, even though you turned the key to the off position.
