speed sensors

I have a wacky situation going on where my speed-o will just drop to nothing and then jump all over the place before settling back at the current speed. I have taken out the speed sensor on the transmission and even swapped it for a different one, but I still have the same problem. So, I am beginning to think I might have a short somewhere. I was looking at swapping the speed sensors on the wheels, but I can't find where the connection is. Is it way up in the car somewhere? Has anyone ever swapped them out?

thanks
