Hi All,
I had a weird experience with my car today. (2000V65sp).
It was only yesterday that I was boasting to my colleague at work that Solara is such an amazing car! I have driven it for 73K and haven’t even changed as much as a brake pad :o

Oh well, today morning on the way to work, out of no where the CHECK ENGINE light comes on.

I immediately pullover and check the oil level. It seemed low at the time, so I called auto club and they told me they don’t carry oil fillups. So I reluctantly drove to the nearest gas station and called the local Toyota stealer. The guy there told me to bring in the car. When I expressed concern about low oil, he said, ok fill it up at bring.

I did another oil check and this time, it showed good. (I guess the last time around my car was at an incline). I checked my gas cap, retightened it. Started the car again.. the light was still ON!!

Then I sat there for 10 mins, redid the whole thing again (oil check and gas cap).. And voila!! Check engine light is gone!

Well, it’s gone for now, but its kind of freaky..
Hopefully nothing shud happen..

Anyone with similar experience??

there could have been many other problems. it seems that you were just low on oil. when is the last time you took the car into service?

73K seems an awful long time to not "even changed as much as a brake pad."

i had an oil change 2000 miles before and as always i have been regular on service the next one being the 75K one. The last majoy major service was 60K and i spend like 600 odd on it. Got the engine decarbed and fuel injection service along with new sparks.

As per brake pad, yeah, it amazes me too.. 73K seems awfully lot.. i keep asking my dealer everytime i go and he says, they are good. last time i checked i had 8mm on it..

well unless, someone changed my brake pads while it was parked overnight.. :drinking: I am still on the originals!

I am not complaining :), tho i make sure i see my discs every day for any lines on them or any noise while braking.

It's not necessary means the oil level is low if the check engine light is on. If your oil level is low, then the oil light will be on. There are many many possible factors that can trigger the check engine light on. IF the car runs ok then i say just ignore it. If the light on for a long time, then bring it to shop and read the error code see what it is

there are lots of reasons as to why your check engine light comes on...mine came on...when i took a left turn...with the back of my car sliding...well kind off..anyways...the engine light came on..and it wouldn't go away for a while so i left it there...and when i took a hard left turn again a few days later the check ebgine light turned off...but seriously you should have it checked but not by the dealer..they suck

Unplugging is just a measure to ensure that there aren't any BIG problems...if the CEL comes back...then take it in to get it repaired...
On a sidenote: I think our ES went close to 75K miles before it needed new brakepads....i guess it all depends on where you park and how your drive.

Dummy lights are known to come on and off when something is wrong. It's prolly a good idea to get it looked at. I know because I destroyed a rod bearing in my Toyota Paseo that way, the light came on but I ignored it because it kept going away :(
Nascar would be a sport if half the cars were driving the other direction.
