Need help! Vibration when braking??

Need help! Vibration when braking??

Postby sc01 » Thu Oct 23, 2003 10:40 pm

Hi,
I have a '99 SLE. I've noticed that sometimes the steering wheel would vibrate when I brake above 40-50 mph. The vibration is even more severe when I step on the brake hard at high speed.
Last time I told the tech. at the dealer about this problem, he resurfaced the disk. But after a while (1 or 2 months) the problem appeared again.
What's wrong?

Sounds like your overheating your brakes man.

From EBC's website:

The ways to eliminate judder are as follows. First of all check that the rotor was installed and was running true with a dial gauge, which should be done by your local mechanic. Vibration or judder at low speeds are always associated with rotor run out. Vibrations or judder at high speeds (70 - 100 mph) are what we call hot judder and are normally associated with over heating of the brake disc. This is usually because of a low quality brake rotor casting (in which case the customer needs to be asked who’s rotor he was using). This is only remedied by replacement of the rotor.

I used to get it really bad when I would be braking on off ramps, but after switching to slotted rotors the vibration has greatly decreased. I can't say for sure this is your problem, but it was mine I think.

IMHO Solara brakes are a little small for such a heavy car. They are the same as the Camry's, which is 300lb lighter car.

I hope you get it all worked out :)!

I get the same steering wheel vibration at 40 -50 mph. For me, it doesn't matter if the brakes are cool or hot so the damage has already been done to the rotors. Since I bought my car used, I have no idea if the rotors are OE. I'm waiting to replace the pads and rotors when the current pads wear down.

Get ur rotor resurfaced and get aftermarket brake pads.

My brake used to vibrate after couple high speed hard braking,
I resurface my rotor and put axxis pad, never vibrate since then.

Your rotors are warped due to overheating. Getting your rotors resurfaced will make the problem disappear for a while. But since the overall surface area decreases, heat is trapped in the rotor longer when you brake. If you maintain the same driving style, it's going to get warped sooner than the first time (which is exactly what happened).

Get new rotors (just a bit more than machinging) and new pads.

It's your rotors. I just had my rotors replaced at only 7,000 miles because I was having the same problems. I was told that my rotors "must have gone bad while sitting on the lot during the summer heat". I thought this sounded insane but from talking to a few people this can really happen if your car has been in the heat and not driven consistently.

That happened to my wife's olds alero. Started vibes @ 5000 miles. Took it to the dealer and they replaced the rotors due to being warped. It felt like the steering wheel wanted to come off. We ignored it for almost 6 months till it got to the point were it was unbearable. Anywaz we dumped that care for our Toyota Sienna anyway but just wanted to share...You might as well hook yourself up with gas slotted or slotted and drilled rotors with some good break pads! Good luck. Let me know how it goes.

Not sure if you area a i4 or v6. If i4 and with rear drums - look there as well. I had exactly the same problem and after replacing the rear drums with a disk setup the vibration is totally gone. Replacing the front rotors earlier had no effect. If you are a v6, then yes - warped rotors...

That happened to me when I first got my car, they cut the rotors and everything has been good since.
