Spark plug wires

Spark plug wires

Is it necessary to change the spark plug wires as part of maintenance and if so at what mileage should they be changed? I'd spring for the NGK blues if I need to change them... I have 91k on my 99 V6. Toyota wants $550 for 90K service... f that s!

I would change the wires as often as you change the sparkplugs...usually around 50-60k miles.

Expensive plug wires - especially on a car like the Solara - will be a gigantic waste of money. You will gain no spark or performance increase by buying them. You will get the same performance increase by buying OEM plug wires. I've owned Magnacores (ran them on some other race cars), and they are not that great, and for the $80 they want (for a 4 cyl), defiantly not worth it. I'd either get OEMs, or if you're really hard up for a pretty aftermarket wire, the NGK (who probably makes the OEM anyway). Anything more than 8mm is a waste here. Trust me.

Your right about them being a waste perfomance wise on a stock car, but sometimes they can work out to be cheaper than the OEMs. The NGKs are very inexpensive
