Any one here having problems filling your tank. My toyota dealer said it is my charcoal canister. 280 for the part ans another 240 to instal it.
I found a dealer in tx that will sell me one for 180, but how hard is it to replace?

I have a similar probleme every once in a while. The gas pump thinks the tank is full when it couldn't possibly be full and won't pump anymore. It has only happened to me probably 3 times in 2 years, though.

The gas pump keeps kicking off like the tank is full when it is far from full
the only way to get gas in it, is to pump it very slowly. it takes about 10 min to put 3/4 of a tank in it.
I looked at chiltons about replacing it and it looks rather easy. But chiltons sometimes doesnt include everything that needs to be removed to het the part out. They burned me once on a starter for a buick i once had. they didnt mention that i had to pull the a/c compressor out of the way to get the starter out. I was just wondering if anyone had replaced on on their own. the 3 hours labor the dealer quoted seems a bit much compared to the chiltons directions

I always thought it was a sensor on the pump itself that senses it topping off. I tried it myself and the pump did not stop if I held it outside of the tank.

Am I understanding this right?

when the pump senses back pressure the pump cuts off. That is why i am having a problem the charcoal canister filters the air being displaced by the gas going into the tank. When the canister is clogged the air can only exit the tank though the filler neck, causing the pump to kick off.

Good Info..O ok. I don't know were you are if your allowed to pump your own gas but try filling the gas just outside of the top of the opening of the filler neck. That worked for me and the pump never cut because it had no back pressure. I don't have the problem you have but I still do that to top off my tank. I put 21 gallons once. The tank holds 18.5. I have no idea were the gas went but I know it was defiantly toped off. That’s just me. If it’s to annoying for you to do then fix it as you mentioned. Good Luck!
