Weird noise while driving on freeway

Weird noise while driving on freeway

Postby nkx1 » Thu Feb 26, 2004 1:48 pm

I was wondering if any of you would have some insight on this issue before I take my car in-

Last night it was raining kind of hard, and I was driving about 55 to 60 on the freeway with my wipers and defroster vents on. Anyway, I started to hear a low grumbling noise periodically from the engine while driving. It would come on for 20 secs or so, then stop, then a few minutes later it would do it again. It sounded like a Nascar racecar or something, and increased when I hit the gas. I have no idea what it was, and so far this morning it hasn't happened. I had two O2 (or maybe 1 O2 and 1 A/F) sensors replaced a week ago, so does anyone think that it could be related?

Any ideas are much appreciated!

I just have the stock intake, so hopefully I didn't get water in the engine. Plus, when I first heard the noise, I pulled off to a gas station to check the air filter. It was dry.

right on the dot!

yes, once you turn your defroster on, the car uses the air compressor (a/c) to help defrost the frost on the winshield.

the compressor turns on regardless if the a/c button is pushed or not.

^hmm...

as for you i have no clue.

we're on a level such that weird sounds are normal. i can list dozens of noises that just randomly pop up and go away. unless the CEL or anything goes off, the car is fine.

yeah... I would get it to where I would go threw somewhat of some water... and then when I hit the gas it would sounds real loud and would vibrate the whole car... and I checked my short air later, and it was wet.. I think I may have gotten just a little bit of water on so it vibrated and crap.. not quite sure tho

.

Same here. Sounds mostly occured for me when I would go over alot of water. I hit the gas and it almost sounds as if it comes from the floor of the car, like its water getting inbetween the downpipe and the cat. were that meshy pipe is at. This must be a Solara thing for real.

hey my car does the same thing. The only thing i could conclude is that it came from the tires picking up too much water. I dont have much traction on them since i have 42,000 miles on the original potenzas. By the way, how much traction do you guys have on your tires. This may be the problem.

It happens to my car too. It scared me, cuz I thought it's my engin (I was driving 60mph on a uphill road.) btw I don't have intake on my car.
I think they are right it's the A/C, cuz when that happens my A/C light starts to flash, and it only happens when the weird sound is on.
