Postby solaraslev67 » Fri Apr 16, 2004 4:49 am

im buying some exel 18's, i have no idea what the hell these numbers mean except the last number obviously means the size of the rims it fits, the tires i could get r 225/40/18, 215/35/18, 235/40/18, 245/40/18. i plan on lowering my car in the next couple of months about 1.7 inches in the front, and 1.4 inches in the rear. So if anyone could help me, that would be great. Answers will be greatly appeciated ASAP as Im buying rims in the next couple of hours...
Thanks, Eddie

225/40/18 would be the ideal tire size for your 18' Rims. You could get away with a wider tire like 235/40/18 but that all depends on how wide your rims are and what offset too. Good Luck. 8)

My personal exp is that when u buy tire/wheel combo packages. U get a great set of rims (wheels)...but the tires are crappy as hell. I'm not referring to sizing but the brands. This is not just me, but a few friends have also had their 'tire/wheel combo' tires eat up quickly. I agree will talk about rotation/balance/alignment/poressure/how driven, blah blah....
For me this is what I plan on doing in the future: NOT buying tire/wheel combos' surely they save me some money upfront, but in a year i dish out mulla for new rubbers. In the future, iwill buy the rims first, and then buy the tires seperately. At least i can choose my (cough: yokahama's :cough) brand!

You can get 235 as long as your rim is a +38 off set and no wider than 18x7

I got 235 and the speedometer is calibrated closer then with option 1.

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/general/size.jsp

Just a little brief on what the numbers on tires mean. Poke around on tirerack to find out anything you want to know about wheels and tires.

First number is width of tire, second number is the ratio of the width to the hight of the sidewall.

235/40/18 is a little taller (4mm) than 225/40/18, so itll be slightly different on the speedometer.

Actualy I used this link I found in the "Web Links" section...

http://www.1010tires.com/tiresizecalcul ... ion=submit

The calculation came out to be better with the 235 width.
Diameter Difference of only 0.36% from my stock wheels.
I had 205/65/15 wheels when stock.

With the 225 the difference was 1.61%

LOWERING question

Postby SmokInDaSolara » Sat Apr 17, 2004 3:32 pm

Sup fellas! I need some help. I got new 18's with tires 225/40/18 for my 2001 solara and I plan on lowering it with Tein S-tech springs with a 1.7 (front) and 1.4(back) drop. I got a heavy subwoofer in my trunk that kinda lowers my rear. Has anyone ever experienced tire rubbing from the back due to lowering and a heavy subwoofer? Give me some insight please!! I really want to lower my solara but only if it doesn't rub alot. thanks
