Clunk on right side when braking/accelerating...

Not struts mounts. When I brake or accelerate, there is like a grabbing sound from the right front of my car (99 SLE). Almost like a deep "pop" of something that isn't quite "catching" right. It does this both when I first hit the gas and when I slow down-- def. mechanical in nature. Like a tooth is missing on the CV joint or something and it has to "catch" the next ring. I don't think it's that, just giving you an idea of what it feels like while I'm driving. CV joints boots are fine and it does NOT do this on turns. Just at low speed like slowing down at a light or speeding up from a light. Not present at cruising speed. Brakes LOOK to be new as well. Ideas?? :-?

I have a problem that MAY be related..when I am applying the brakes while giong over bumps, I get a feeling like my ABS is kicking in...could that be my struts? I have 65% brake pads left, so its not that

Check the brake hardware. The shims in between the pad and the caliper. Not the shims on the back of the pad. They could be worn or even missing. Also check the lower ball joint and the lower control arm bushing. To check the ball joint raise the car and see if there is any play in the wheel. The lower control arm should still be good but check it out to be sure. Also check the brake caliper guide bolts to make sure they aren't loose.

Yes, passenger side. I'm stock height/suspension etc. I'm getting my oil changed in about a week at the dealer so I want to describe it right, hope it happens when they test it, and be ready with my Astro lube.

Your rotors are warped.

When they have "serviced" the brakes, they just take off the wheels (may be not even that) and estimate how much brakepad is left.

So the symptoms are shaky pedal + shaky steering wheel?

That's my guess. I'll find out on Friday the 23rd. Were yours actually broken (all 4?) or just worn out? Is this a common problem and would you guys recommend OEM or aftermarket? Thanks!

No, it was just one that was broken. The one in the front bottom.

This happened to me the other day... turned out one of my lugs broke off of the front and the wheel was slowly loosening ... check to see if all the lugs are tight :o

I get the same *clunk* from the front end, just below and forward of the front driverside wheel. Usually happens when I shift from Reverse into Drive and get on the gas. Just one *clunk* and after that, nothing. I hit some railroad tracks pretty hard the other day, and I wonder if that may have dislodged a bushing or fractured a ball joint...damn trains! :x

UPDATE-- My mechanic took the strut off and retorqued it/ Made sure all the bolts and stuff were tight and it still did it. Turned out to be a bolt in a frame mount toward the rear of the front end, on the right side. He took it apart, lubed it and retorqued the bolt. I didn't see exactly where it was on the car, but he fixed it Clunk is gone!
